Georgetown Bach Chorale starts the spring season with its annual Good Friday, April 6 performance featuring a dramatic selection of music chosen to reflect the solemn day in the liturgical cycle. The concert, at Knox Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, will begin at 8 p.m. with an instrumental work featuring Avery MacLean on recorder in a dazzling rendition of Vivaldi's Concerto in a minor for Recorder, Strings and Harpsichord. The choir will then join
orces with the orchestra to perform various choruses and arias from J. S. Bach's contemplative setting of the Passion According to St John. Following intermission the choir will perform selections from various cantatas interspersed with instrumental works by Bach for harpsichord and strings. The orchestra for this concert is a little out of the ordinary in that there will be two recorders, two Baroque oboes, two harpsichords, one Baroque organ, and five strings. It is not often
that one gets to hear performances played on period instruments at Baroque pitch outside of the larger venues in Toronto. Come and join the Georgetown Bach Chorale, let yourself be transported to the more serious side of the universe and take in the rich sounds J. S. Bach and his contemporary, Vivaldi, have composed. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased in advance at Foodstuffs and The Freckled Lion or 905-877-8321.
