April 20

Communities around the world will be celebrating Earth Day on Sunday, April 22 with a wide variety of activities. In recognition of the importance of improving our environment, the Town of Halton Hills is inviting the public to participate in a series of events between April 2028. The third annual Halton Hills 20-Minute Makeover is set for Friday, April 20. This year organizers hope to build on past participation levels and have an even greater impact. Businesses, institutions and schools will be sending their employees and students out to scour their grounds or nearby areas to remove unsightly litter. Jane Fogal, Chair of the Litter-Free Task Force, is enthusiastic about the addition of the 20-Minute Makeover to the clean-up calendar. "This gives businesspeople a target time to get out and clean up the irritating litter that is usually left for another day," said Fogal. Helen MacCormack, Chamber of Commerce representative on the Task Force applauds the Makeover. "It makes sense to engage the business community in our clean-up efforts because a clean, attractive environment is good for business and great for the community as a whole." Schools are again encouraged to participate. Last year 17 schools received certificates of appreciation at a Town council meeting. "Teaching kids that littering is unacceptable and getting their help in cleaning up their environment is essential. It is an important lesson for our youth," said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. Once again Town of Halton Hills employees will be leading the way with all departments being encouraged to select an area to clean up. Free garbage bags and gloves will be available from the Town Works Yard, The Acton and Georgetown BIA offices and the Chamber of Commerce office at 328 Guelph St. in Georgetown. Participating businesses and schools are asked to register with Pubic Works by calling 905-873-2601 ex 2610 so that the Town can acknowledge their efforts.
