Using the garden theme as her jumping off point, she chose a selection of fresh florals and botanicals in vibrant tones of apple green and raspberry red and combined them with two clever borders simulating vines and a picket fence. To complete the look, she had a romantic window seat custom built and flanked in sheer fabric which could be pulled down to create the effect of a small tent. "I wanted to create something that would grow along with the little girl," said Rinaldi. "It helped that they were dream clients who were really open to suggestions." Regardless of the room undergoing a makeover, Rinaldi says the design process always starts with an interview in the client's home where she can get a feel for a person's likes and dislikes, as well as lifestyle considerations. "Once I get a clear idea of where we're head ed, I can come back to my studio and start pulling together different scenarios that I think the client will like. I always like the look of a room to be customer-driven. That way, the client feels com fortable and I end up with happy .customers who don't feel intimidated." Rinaldi says today's trend is definitely toward a more eclectic look which means blending a vari ety of styles and periods. While the look is a pop ular one, she says it can also be difficult some times to know where to stop. "People get afraid of making mistakes when they're doing a lot of mixing," she notes. "That's when they're most likely to want the help of a designer." Gloria Rinaldi: trend getting more eclectic Photo by Brent Foster Design going eclectic says award-winning designer By Nancy Alexander SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER When interior designer Gloria Rinaldi set out to create a fantasy bedroom for a young client, she had no idea the room would ultimately bring her both national and international recognition. As the franchise owner for Decorating Den Interiors in Oakville, Rinaldi has already won some prestigious awards, including 1997 Decorator of the Year (judged by Canadian House and Home Magazine) and 2000 Franchise Owner of the Year. Her most recent awards, handed out at the Decorating Den Interior's 34th annual conference in Reno, Nevada, included a first place finish in the Canadian Dream Room Contest (bedroom cat egory) and second place in the International Contest. Over 50 Canadian entries were first judged by editors at Canadian House and Home Magazine this past spring, then continued on to compete against 250 international entries in New York. These were judged by editors from such presti gious publications as House Beautiful, Good Housekeeping, Country Living and Woman's Day. The decorators submitted photos and other materials from completed rooms they had deco rated for area residents. Their submissions were judged based on design excellence, creative prob lem solving and overall presentation.
