Sharing the lives of veterans is what Remembrance Day is about continued from p.7 It recognizes Trafalgar Township veterans, who served during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. It features the names of almost 700 men and women who served their country. Since its dedication, Ward 5 Councillors Jeff Knoll and Marc Grant, with the help of Town of Oakville staff, have organized the annual civilian ceremony, which has grown each year. The Currells attended last year and returned this year to share why Remembrance Day was special to them. Holding two shadow boxes commemorating Ron's father and uncle, they shared with the audience how Ron's father was a Second World War veteran, who was part of the British Royal Airforce. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross medal for flying continually over a hill in Burma (now Myanmar). "The men below survived because he dropped all the supplies they needed to hang on and so we remember Norman through that," said Roberta, adding they celebrated Ron's father's 100 birthday in January 2014 before he died a month later. The couple also shared how Ron's uncle, who died before Ron was born, was only 21 years old when he flew over Berlin. Ron's last surviving aunt had given him all of the memorabilia she kept of Lou (Louis) Archibald, who flew a Lancaster bomber during the Second World War and was buried in Germany. "Rather than leave these in a drawer, we've put these in a shadow box and they're going to be and Knoll and a reading of In Flanders Fields by Canadian John McCrae and Why Wear A Poppy by Don Crawford. Knoll urged attendees to continue remembering Canada's heroes. "This is our legacy," he said. "... It's important we cherish them while they're here and that we also cherish our current members, who are serving and who have passed." He hopes others will follow in the Currells' footsteps and share stories of Canada's history. "Feel free to bring back the story or keep them in your heart because that's what Nov. 11 is all about," he said. 9 | Thursday, November 12, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Trafalgar Memorial features the names of almost 700 men and women from Trafalgar Township, who served their country. | photo by Julia Le Oakville Beaver on our walls where we'll remember them," said Roberta. Ron told the Beaver after the ceremony, silver tags like the one displayed in his uncle's box, would have been worn on the sleeves of the mothers of deceased veterans. The 64-year-old added patriotism runs through his blood. His father and uncles were in the Royal Air Force, his mother's two brothers were in the Royal Canadian Air Force and his paternal grandfather was a major in the British Army. Ron dedicated 35 years to the military through The Lorne Scots, army cadets and air cadets. He and his wife have kept all the memorabilia of their family's past. Some include the telegram notifying Lou Archibald's family of his death and old photographs.
