continued from p.4 Most memorable war-time moment... `Coming home' -- Barrett May 18, 2010 when a suicide car bomber blew himself up beside the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) convoy Parker was travelling with. The service was widely praised and former Oakville mayor and Second World War veteran Harry Barrett, 90, said it gets better every year. Barrett joined the Canadian army at age 18 and served in Belgium, Holland and Germany. The former mayor has previously described a close call he had during the war in which he was confronted by surrendering German soldiers as he scouted a road in Germany. Barrett was stunned to learn the Germans were going to shoot him, but didn't because they believed anyone brazen enough to walk down the middle of the road in an enemy village must have backup. Asked what his most memorable war experience was Barrett replied, "Coming home." Captain Michal Mendyka called the ceremony excellent, particularly the mixture of children, older and young war veterans. The veteran of Afghanistan, who commanded a reconnaissance platoon in 2010, said he was happy to see the community participation. "It shows the community still honours and respects its service members," said Mendyka. "That's important to me." 5 | Thursday, November 12, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Hawthorne said she and her sister visited the Netherlands in the spring as the country celebrated the 70th anniversary of its liberation from the Nazis. She said the people there show no signs of forgetting Canada anytime soon. Retired Sgt. Wayne Halliday carried out 11 tours of duty during his time with the Canadian Forces. The Milton resident was deployed to such conflict zones as the Golan Heights, Cyprus, Afghanistan and Bosnia. For Halliday, Remembrance Day has become very personal. "I did lose some good friends in Afghanistan. I always attended Remembrance Day ceremonies, but now it means more to me than it ever did," said Halliday. "As much as I have to work like everybody else in Ontario, I'll take the time off to have my own moment." As the 11th hour approached, four soldiers from the Lorne Scots Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment, took up positions at the four corners of the Cenotaph, heads bowed, rifles pointed downward in remembrance. Finally the faint sound of drums and bagpipes could be heard, growing louder until a parade of Canadian soldiers, followed by Halton Regional Police, Oakville firefighters, RCMP officers, Knights of Columbus, scouts, cadets and local dignitaries -- all made their way to the square. Those who could stand, did so for the singing of O Canada and a moment of silence during which a bugler played The Last Post. INJURED? I Can Help!
