It's possible for caregivers to have a five-day break by com bining the evening/overnight respite service with SEN A CA 's day program , explains Wendy McBride, program manager of SENACA. "People can drop a client off at 8 o 'clock M onday morning, and the per son can say in our day program and evening/overnight respite service until 6 p.m. on Friday." T he respite service is available M onday through Thursday nights; SENACA operates five days a week. "We hope to expand the respite to weekends in the future," she added. "O ur fam ily caregivers need a break." M cBride noted caring for a senior with A lzheim er's can be quite dem and ing. " Som etim es they d o n 't sleep through the night. For some o f our fam ilies, their days feel like they're 36 hours long." SEN A CA and O aklands received about $100,000 in annual provincial funding from the Ontario M inistry of Health, Long Term Care, through its A lzheim er Strategy. It also received funding from the U nited Way o f Oakville. "We're budgeted for two people," said McBride, noting the service will be provided in a cottage on a shared basis with Oaklands. The cost o f this com bined service to family caregivers is $50 per 24-hour period. The SENACA program on its N own costs $16 a day, including meals, for 10 hours, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Evening/overnight respite is $34, including meals - $16 if the client has dinner and spends the evening only. One-to-one care is provided while a client is in evening/overnight care, explained M cBride."We offer it as a `home away from hom e.'" SENACA - Seniors Enjoy Nurturing A ctivities C om panionship Achievements - can accommodate 18 people per day at its Oaklands setting. The program includes music, exer cises, hairdressing, manicures, recre ation, m eals and snacks, cooking, games, sports, pet therapy, walking, sing-alongs, birthday parties, gardening, foot care, and chiropody. Family physi cians, hospital discharge planners, fam ilies and other individuals in the com m unity refer clients. Currently, SEN A CA has a few openings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. "For them, it's like coming to a social club," said McBride. "It's their place to come. The hardest part is con vincing families their loved ones with A lzheim er's can come here."
