www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 26, 2015 | 10 Provincial gas tax cash to help with public transit infrastructure: Flynn by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Local MPP and Ontario Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn recently announced Oakville would receive $2.5 million in gas tax funding this year for use in public transit infrastructure. Oakville is one of 95 Ontario municipalities receiving a total $332.9 million this year in gas tax funding for public transit projects. The Province of Ontario allocates about two cents from the 14.7 per litre gas tax to public transit funding for municipalities. "Support from the Province is paying off for Oakville, allowing Oakville Transit to make significant transit improvements for local families and visitors to our community," Flynn said in a press release. He noted this is the 12th consecutive year Ontario is providing support to Oakville to improve its public transit system. He also noted this funding has supported Oakville in: · Purchasing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that will provide customers with real-time bus information, enhanced accessibility technologies and performance management tools to better plan routes and service levels; · Purchasing three new 30-foot conventional buses, two new paratransit vehicles (Care-A-van buses) and refurbishing eight 40-foot conventional buses; · Installing security cameras at key locations (Oakville GO, Bronte GO, Uptown Core Bus Terminal) to enhance safety and security; · Installing concrete walkways and landing pads at 39 locations across town to enhance bus stop accessibility. "We truly appreciate the funding support from the provincial government," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "This support helps facilitate the continued development of Oakville Transit and enhance the transit user's experience." Flynn said Ontario is building safe, reliable infrastructure to help create jobs and ensure a bright future for the province. Between April and September of this year, he said, the Province announced support for more than 200 projects intended to keep people and goods moving, strengthen the economy, connect communities and improve quality of life. The 2015-16 gas tax funding is intended to build on that progress.
