To help get the word out that violence against women is not tolerated, Halton Region Chair Gary Carr, Halton Regional Police Chief Stephen Tanner and community leaders joined members of the Halton Violence Prevention Council (HVPC) at the beginning of November. They gathered at the Halton Regional Centre at 1151 Bronte Rd. The HVPC says its mission is to end violence against women and their children in this community. The organization has developed and facilitated training aimed at strengthening service provider responses to victims of violence -- particularly if those victims are also experiencing other issues that are often related to abuse, such as addiction and/or mental health concerns. Members of Halton Violence Prevention Council, including its Speakers' Bureau, gathered at Halton Region alongside community leaders Nov. 5 to of cially launch Woman Abuse Awareness Month. The HVPC has recently supported collaborative practices between the Violence Against Women sector and the Halton Children's Aid Society; and fostered survivor-informed initiatives, including a Speakers' Bureau. The Nov. 5 event featured a speech by a member of the Speaker's Bureau, whose keynote address spoke to the issue of stalking. The HVPC continues to be engaged in the Neighbours Friends and Families Campaign, a provincial strategy to raise awareness of the signs of woman abuse, so people who are close to an at-risk woman, or a man AIRE ONE MADNEss sAlE!
