Oakville Ballet's The Nutcracker a holiday family tradition A more than 30-year, holiday family tradition returns tomorrow (Friday) to kick off the season as the Oakville Ballet stages The Nutcracker. "The tradition continues with Oakville Ballet's full-length production featuring students of the Oakville School of Classical Ballet (OSCB) and former student Emma Guertin, currently in the trainee program with Orlando Ballet," stated a media release. Returning this season is guest artist Tyler Gledhill who trained at The National Ballet School in Toronto, Het National Balletacademie in Amsterdam, and The Pacific Northwest Ballet School in Seattle. He will dance the roles of Snow Prince, and Sugar Plum's Cavalier partnered by Guertin, Leah Terry, Anny Bernier and Zoë Kirby of Oakville School of Classical Ballet. Up until September, 16-year-old Guertin had been a student at OSCB for the past 10 years and was selected to join the elite program at Orlando Ballet. Under the artistic direction of Amanda Paterson, the Oakville Ballet's production will be staged at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy St., Friday (Nov. 27) at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday (Nov. 28) and Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday (Nov. 29) and Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit www.oakvillecentre.ca/whats-on/ nutcracker.html. · · · The Oakville Ballet also announced it will be adding a new production for its 2016-17 season. "This new ballet and audience development has been made possible by the participation and generous support of Oakville residents, the Bytzek family," stated the release. "The mission of Oakville Ballet is to provide performance experience for aspiring young dancers throughout their classical ballet training while helping the community to develop an appreciation for the performing arts." The local ballet is comprised of dancers aged 12 and older and recruits by audition from the Greater Toronto Area. Set in the main gallery of the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd., the exhibit opens at 7 p.m. and will be coupled by the awards ceremony for this year's competition winners. The annual photography contest is put on by the Oakville Camera Club, open to Ontario residents of all photography skills since 2007 and offers the chance to win a $1,000 grand prize. "We were amazed with the quality of submissions this year," said Oakville Camera Club president William Smith. "The exhibit will be in the main gallery at Queen Elizabeth Park Community Cultural Centre, it is a premier space for displaying art in Oakville and we're happy to show here until Jan. 25, 2016."
