Wednesday, July 25, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D5 Gilroy no-hitter paces junior Little Leaguers to district title Russell Gilroy of the Oakville junior Little League all-star team couldn't have picked a more opportune time to pitch a no-hitter than the cham pionship game of the district junior Little League cham pionship which wrapped up in Stoney Creek on Sunday. Riding his complete gam e, no-hit shutout, his team m anaged to ride a first inning runscoring double by A nthony Am one into a 1-0 district cham pionship victory over host Stoney Creek. Gilroy allow ed only two Stoney C reek play ers to reach base, one that was hit by a pitch and one on a walk. He struck out 12 others. As a result, Gilroy and his team m ates were slated to board a plane for Thunder Bay yester day (Tuesday) to compete in the provincial championships. The winner advances to the nationals. Gilroy pitched a no-hitter earlier in the sea son but it was a four-inning mercy. Sunday's, on the other hand, was forged under the pressure o f a one-run lead in an allor-nothing championship game. The highlight o f his baseball career so far, he tipped his hat to his team m ates. "The defence was am azing," he said in a phone inter view on Tuesday, ju st prior to leaving for the provincials. With it being such a close and important game, he said it really only hit him in the last inning. He said he's looking forw ard to the provin cials, and related that O akville has a tough game to begin. O akville sw ept through the playdow ns undefeated, in fact the only runs they allowed were in a com fortable Thursday night 14-4 win over eventual cham pionship rival Stoney Creek. Sandwiched around that were an 8-0 win over Erindale on Saturday and an 8-0 win over Ancaster on Tuesday. H ere's the summary. OAKVILLE 8, Erindale 0: Oakville pitcher Anthony Am one pitched the com plete game only allowing three hits. Am one also struck out 12 batters and gave up one base on balls. David Ljubanovich came in and pitched the last two innings and allowed one hit and gave up one base on balls and one earned run. OAKVILLE 14, Stoney Creek 4: Oakville had an 11-inning shutout until the 5th inning when Stoney Creek scored their first o f four runs that inning. But Oakville scored early and often. M ichael Bonnano went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. All Bonnano need was a home run to complete the cycle as he had a single, a double and a triple already in the game. OAKVILLE 8, A ncaster 0: A nthony Am one pitched a 4 -h it com plete gam e shutout. A ncaster's second basem an Patrick Shulist made some outstanding plays to keep Oakville from scoring more then they did. Coach Augie Bonnano has been quietly hon ing this group of 13 and 14-year-olds Juniors who have now made it to the provincials. Prior to last w eek's district championships, the team journeyed to Brockville, for a looksee at some o f their potential opponents in provincial play. "Our team this year is really prepped," says Bonnano. "We have four of the finest pitchers Oakville has seen in some time-- Anthony Amone, M ichael Bonnano, Russell Gilroy, and Trevor Jones. "These boys have spent the winter under Zal Ew ars1tutelage. Ewars is a former Ottawa Lynx (Expos). Zal has really made a difference in these boys' development. On top o f that, they hit very well." And that difference showed in the opening game in Brockville, as they took on the Orleans (Ottawa) team, with Gilroy showing the way with 6k's in four innings, and Bonnano 5k's in three innings, en route to a 4-0 win. On top of their pitching perform ances, Gilroy added a double and RBI, while Bonnano had two runs, a single and a stolen base to his credit. They were not alone as Arnone's triple, single and a run, along with M ichael Clarke's RBI, took care o f the scoring. M ichael Burgess' double and single, along with singles by Chris Heath and Brad Leeming closed out the hitting. Things did not go as well for the Juniors in their next game against Kanata. It was 4-2 loss, despite Gilroy's first inning single and RBI, and although behind 4-1 in the last inning, Bonnano's valiant triple and run on Jones' fly ball RBI made it close, but no win. Handling the pitching duties were Amone (5k's), Leeming (2k's). Singles by Gilroy (2), Heath, Burgess, and A m one, who also checked in with a double contributed to a real close game. The juniors closed out their Brockville visit against M assena (N.Y.) and they looked tough for three innings, with Oakville nursing a 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the fourth, the juniors bats exploded for 10 runs -- three successive doubles (Bonnano, Jones, Gilroy), five singles (A rnone 2, G ilroy, B urgess), five walks (Clarke, Leeming, Jordan DiCarlo, Heath) and runs by Gilroy 2, Am one 2, Clarke, Leeming, Robbie B ernard, Burgess, D iC arlo, Heath, Bonnano, Jones). Dan M andic made his pres ence felt in the outfield. W hile they didn't win top honours, it was a three-way tie for first, with Oakville being one run shy in the final review. Coach Bonnano was pretty pleased with his charges, and also thanked his sponsors, Ferrone Fitness Centre, who made his facilities avail able for dry land training, as well as Tami Dagnall o f the Cooperators, for their excellent support. Oakville's junior Little Leaguers were slated to fly to Thunder Bay yesterday (TUesday) for the provincial championships this week. Clockwise, Michael Burgess, Robbie Bernard, Trevor Jones, Jordan Deejarmo, Brad Leeming, Chris Heath, Dan Mandic, Michael Bonnano, Jordan DiCarlo, Russell Gilroy, Anthony Arnone and Michael Clarke. The teams wear the traditional red, white and blue colours of all Oakville rep team s and are known as the Oakville A's. But this year's minor peewee team, made up of players bom in 1989, has proven to be one of the most success ful teams ever. From their first season together as a rookie ball team, the boys have com peted at the AAA level. They have won three consecutive Central Ontario Baseball Association (COBA) championships (1998, 1999 and 2000) and are sitting in first place in their league at the halfway point of the season. Their current season record now stands at an impressive 21 wins, one loss and three ties with two tourna ment championships under their belts. The team has a core group of play ers who have played on all three championship teams. This year, they have added three new players to the roster who bring previous rep baseball experience and strong hitting to the line-up. The team has tremendous depth throughout. Run production comes from every hitter in the batting order, eight players can step in to pitch in any, situation and the stalwart defense frus trates the opposition at every turn. This year's line-up consists of Shane Cole, Daniel Hunt, Mike Ide, K arson Johnson, Graem e M offatt, Neil Revell, Andrew Smith, Mike Trbovich, Justin Vaive, Jordan Windisch, Tyler Windisch and Mike Young.
