Clues that a thunder storm may be gathering include thickening, darken ing clouds plus increasing rain and wind. - When required, do not hesitate but seek proper shelter immediately. - Once inside a proper shelter, stay away from any conducting path to the outside. Stay off the phone and away from electrical appliances, lighting and electrical sockets. Keep your distance from plumbing and don't watch lightning from windows or doorways. - If forced into a car (preferably one with a solid metal roof) avoid contact with conducting paths, close the windows, lean away from the door and don't touch the steering wheel, ignition, gear shift or radio. Convertibles and cars with fiberglass or plas tic shells are unsuitable lightning shelters. - If a shelter is not available, avoid higher eleva tions, wide open areas, water related activities, open vehicles or open buildings like picnic pavilions. - People should stand at least 15 feet apart and should never stand under trees unless in a wooded area and there is no other place to hide. - If you find yourself out in the open, lay flat or curl up in a ball to make the smallest target possible. - If in a swimming pool, leave it immediately. Pools are often connected to a much larger surface area via underground pipes, gas lines and electrical wires. A lightning strike in one place of this metallic network may induce shocks elsewhere. - Count to 30 if you see lightning and if it strikes again before you finish, the storm is within 10 kms. Go inside and wait 30 minutes before returning out side. - If someone is struck, remember that they do not retain an electrical charge and can be touched for First Aid purposes. Call 911. Time to conserve water Halton Region would like to advise its residents that while the weather is hot and dry to conserve water in their community by following these tips: · Water lawn once a week (less in wet weather). · Water lawn early in the morning between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. · Only use 1" (2.5 cm) of water per week (use a tuna can to monitor). · Sweep driveway instead of washing it. · Shut off water while soaping up cars and turn on again to rinse. Be water wise and help conserve this precious resource!
