. Fireworks Fireworks sponsor promises a blast THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 20, 2001 s S P P ts c . J\m ! JjmM cj\tlw ( y&tfii By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF This weekend's Oakville Waterfront Festival will be a big blast -- literally -- promises local busi nessman Chris Camovale. "I'm calling it `The Big Blast'," said Camovale whose company, Sunveil Sunwear of Oakville, has spent big bucks to sponsor the best, brightest and biggest fireworks spectacular the festival -- and Oakville -- has ever seen on Saturday (June 23) night. "It will be an unprecedented fireworks display of mega proportions," vowed Camovale, whose compa ny of protective sunwear products has sponsored fes tival fireworks for four years. Saturday night's show will be a 20-minute, sparkling spectacular that takes place down by the lakefront at approximately 10 p.m., right after Jann Arden's concert. Friday night's fireworks will also take place at 10 p.m., following the concert by the Jeff Healey Band and Kim Mitchell, and are sponsored by the Oakville New Car Dealers. Camovale said he sponsors festival fireworks for two reasons. He believes festival sponsors get "a good bang for their buck" since the festival draws people from across Ontario and New York in the hope of boosting local business. Camovale also, personally, gets a bang out of fire works. "It's my thing. I've been a fireworks pyromaniac since I can remember," he said. The attraction began for the native of England when, as a child, he attended the Guy Fawkes Day fes tivities held each autumn. That's when fireworks, bonfires and burning effi gies recall historical figure Guy Fawkes, who tried to bum down the British parliament buildings. Today, Camovale is an admitted fireworks fan who travels far and wide to see various displays -- and stages as many of his own fireworks parties as possi ble. This weekend, Oakville will get in on his action. "This will be the best display ever. In the history of Oakville, we've never had a bang like this. It will be quite monumental," said the resident of Oakville for more than 20 years. "It will be kind of like blowing up a Mercedes, and not even entry level at that," he said. At the helm of the display that will be safely lit from the barge out in the lake will be Dave Olsen, a Richmond Hill fire fighting veteran whose hobby and part-time business is fireworks. Camovale said this year's fireworks will be extra special for a trio of reasons. It's his company's 15th anniversary. It's the festi val's 10th anniversary. And, it will be something of a Swan Song for Olsen who is retiring. "He'll be throwing in a bunch of things we've never seen before. We'll be seeing some brand new fireworks like Spanish Candles which were first seen at the Olympics in Australia," said Camovale. "There will be more than one big bang at the end, too," said Camovale noting lots of fireworks that cost $1,000 per piece will be lit in tandem for the finale. And while it's all safe because the fireworks hap pen out over the lake, the proximity of the sight and Enjoy the fireworks everyone k KERR *j £ ± ± a 4 C A D IL L A C P O N T IA C B U IC K Inc. That's what set Oakville's fireworks parties head and shoulders above those of other communities, said Camovale, whose background includes chemistry, architecture and haute couture. While the local businessman may like his fire works hot, his company is all about providing safety and shelter from the sun's ultraviolet rays. His company, Sunveil Sunwear, received the Manufacturer of the Year Award 2000 from the Oakville Chamber of Commerce and Rotary International. Some of his proceeds from the festival will support the Lupus Association in Canada and the United States, as well as the Porphryia Foundation, both of which deal with skin disorders. Sunveil Sunwear is available in 27 countries. Locally, it can be found in Oakville shops like Karen's Boutique, Irish Classics, Harrison's, Chatsworth & Hall; at Burlington's The Watershop & Sunveil Boutique; or, Mississauga's Truly You Boutique. It will also be available at the festival at the Sunveil Sunwear pavilion which will stand 22-ft. tall, and thanks to design by Ian McClelland & Associates Ltd., will offer both Sunveil Sunwear information and products and a garden environment for festival-goers to make a pitstop, visit the water cooler and cool off. Camovale is also sponsoring a Sunveil hat deco rating contest and doling out show specials like miniFrisbees and prism glasses to enhance the fireworks display. p i w ^ During W a te rfro n t Festival Activities · Friday Night-Empire Sandy W ine Tasting Cruise Sponsored by the W ine Rack in Bronte.
