D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 20, 2001 B e s t W h e e l s O a k v i l l e G o as slow as you can, as quick as you have to (Continued from page D1) Anyone thinking that this is just a clan gathering of beer-swilling rednecks bent on motorized mayhem and terrorizing the local flora and fauna couldn't be more wrong. A Jeep Jamboree is a family event with a strict no-alcohol policy and over all adherence to the Tread Lightly philos ophy that stresses a "go as slow as you can, as quick as you have to" policy and a shared sense of environmental respon sibility. Even so, Jeep owners of every stripe come to these events. There are the griz zled veterans, close-knit comrades swap ping stories and past glories. The rookies, newbie Jeep owners, tentatively and ner vously exploring new limits. Young cou ples, old couples, singles and families. And the vehicles. Shiny, showroomfresh Grand Cherokees. Older Wagons, scratched, dented and dulled with use like favorite toys. Everyday commuter Cherokees and off-road customized monsters. Testosterone-laden TJs bulging with power winches and oversized wheels and tires, last week's mud carefully preserved and worn like some battle-contested badge of honor. This diverse group of vehicles and drivers, each with different levels of skill and experience, soon sorted themselves out into trails with differing degrees of difficulty. Rookies, even veterans, honed their skills with a few runs around the Jeep 101 on-site training course that pre pares and bolsters driver confidence lev els with hints of the trails to come. And then, off we went, rumbling away in a convoy with almost militaristic flavor - the long line of Jeeps, the scent of flapping canvas, the squawk of CB static, M+S blocky-treaded tires howling on pavement as we trekked to the trails. For the rest of the weekend, even on the moderate trails we had selected, we faced all kinds of challenges - brushscratching lumber roads, gull ies, hill climbs, swampy bogs and one river crossing so tricky our trail leaders had to virtually guide wheel placement from one rock to the next. Mary couldn't stop smiling. We came away dirty, dusty and tired but with renewed confidence in not only our dri ving abilities, but in the abilities of the rugged off-roader that started it all - the Jeep. "For 2001, Jamborees will continue to emphasize great off-roading experi ences and opportunities for fun cama raderie among fellow Jeep owners who attend," said Ron Baker, President of AVP, the company responsible for administering and operating Jeep Jamboree Canada events. "As well, there will be opportunities to see the new 2002 Jeep Liberty, experience Jeep specialty vehicles, check out aftermarket add-on products and, of course, brush up on the Jeep 101 training course for first-time Jeep vehicle owners," Baker said. In its fourth year, Jeep Jamboree con tinues to expand, having added a new venue earlier this season in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. For 2001, Jeep Jamboree Canada events will take place at the following times and places in Canada: Kawarthas Weekend #1 Bobcaygeon/Buckhom, Ontario - Friday, July 6 - Sunday, July 8. Kawarthas Weekend #2 Bobcaygeon/Buckhom, Ontario - Friday, July 13 - Sunday, July 15. Okanagan Valley Jamboree Penticton, B.C. - Friday, July 27 Sunday, July 29. . 'ires June 30/01 Drowsy driver is a dangerous driver Working the night shift the last few weeks has taken a toll on your sleeping habits and the only thing on your mind is a soft pillow and a dark room. But it isn't a bed you're headed for, it's your car and the highway. A study by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board found that 60% of vehicle accidents investigated wert£ f at i g ue - re l at e d^ And the Canadian* Automobile Association prQ; , duced a brochureentitled "Wake. Up!" that specific cally addresses the issue of sleepy dri vers ' creating havoc on the roads. Sometimes the best solution is get ting off the roacf and sleeping, but' there are ways to' combat fatigue. For example: Get a driving buddy. If you havej trouble staying awake at thef · wheel, try not to drive alone. Find someone who wilt share the driving. Plan your driving time when you are normally, awake. Exercise. Pull over and do stretches, and perhaps even take a quick walk. Open a win dow and breathe in fresh cold air. Don't drink any alcohol before you get behind the wheel. Even that one glass of wine may make you even more tired. Check any prescriptions you are taking to ensure they do not cause drowsiness. If you do feel giving into sleep is the only alternative -- pull over! Look for a safe spot to pull off the road (perhaps a rest sta tion parking lot or carpool lot), lock your doors and take that nap your body needs. "We're reading a growing number of reports showing drowsy drivers can be just as danger ous on the roads as drunk drivers," says Linda Webb, an insurance expert from The Co-operators.
