The federal government is working with Canadian organizations, private sponsors and all levels of government to help Syrian refugees resettle in Canada. After announcing its support of the federal government's refugee plans, the Town is now sharing information for local residents who want to get involved. Of the first wave of refugees, 10,000 by year end, the majority will be privatelysponsored and settled and cared for by their sponsors. In Ontario, those accessing the federallyfunded Refugee Assistance Program agencies will be located in six urban centres: Toronto, Ottawa, London, Windsor, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo. Faith groups assisting refugees The Town also notes many faith organizations across Halton are organizing sponsorship of refugee families. As of Wednesday (Dec. 9), the site states 1,451 permanent resident visas have been issued to refugees to come to Canada and 416 Syrian refugees have arrived.
