www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 17, 2015 | 44 Artscene Oakville Galleries appoints new curator Oakville Galleries recently appointed a new curator. Frances Loeffler will take over the role in February 2016 and oversee the development of the local gallery's exhibition and collection programs. "I am thrilled to be joining Oakville Galleries as curator," said Loeffler. "The gallery has an outstanding exhibition program -- often producing important exhibitions with artists at a formative moment in their careers -- and a wonderfully rich collection of contemporary Canadian art. "I am excited to immerse myself in the lively community within which Oakville Galleries plays a vital part, and to work with the team to produce a dynamic exhibition program with artists from Canada and around the world," she added. Loeffler succeeds Marnie Fleming, who retired from her position late last year after more than 20 years in the role, and "will play an active role in conversations about the organization's potential expansion and relocation as part of the Town of Oakville's Downtown Cultural Hub project," according to a media release. Matthew Hyland, Oakville Galleries director, said the local arts hub "couldn't be happier" with Loeffler's addition to their team. "She has developed a compelling vision for Oakville Galleries' curatorial program, one that will make a meaningful contribution to local, national and international conversations on contemporary art," he said. Frances Loeffler hails from London, U.K. Loeffler will be relocating for the position from London, U.K., where she has worked at the contemporary art gallery White Cube since 2012. During her time there, she worked with a range of notable artists, such as Franz Ackermann, Runa Islam and Christian Marclay. Prior to her tenure at White Cube, Loeffler held curatorial positions at the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art and the public art agency Situations in Bristol. She is an independent curator and writer, and has also curated exhibitions for galleries around the world -- including venues in London, Antwerp, Rome, and Wellington -- and has written for a variety of arts publications, such as Frieze magazine, The White Review and Cura. "While her point of view is international in scope, she demonstrates a remarkably well-established commitment to -- and dynamic perspective on -- Canadian art and artists.
