She sang in the choir on a weekly basis. She served on committees, the board. She was just a very welcoming and outgoing person," said Rabbi Stephen Wise. "Whenever someone was new to the synagogue, and the community , she would be the first to call. She was just an incredible person." While Fein died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2013, Wise said the congregation wants to keep her memory alive and so has created an award in her name that recognizes exceptional leadership. Burnstein was selected as the first recipient of this award because of her outstanding community involvement. "Frimmy has been a part of the synagogue probably as long as Liz Fein was... 20 to 25 years. She has also been involved in volunteering, and on the board, and in social justice projects and Rabbi Stephen Wise education for the children," said Wise. "Her most valuable contribution recently has been this Social Action Committee of which she has been the chair for six or seven years. In her time, she has galvanized this community to be more involved in social justice work, such as twice a year serving food at Kerr Street Mission's soup kitchen. We've done the cancer awareness Daffodil Program. We've raised awareness for hospitals in Israel and fundraisers to support native Canadians. It seems like she is always pushing us and guiding us into different social justice areas." The evening of Sunday, Nov. 22 will feature a Gala Dinner Fundraiser. There will be a presentation of archives of the congregation's 60-year history, a welcoming address from Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the president of the Union of Reform Judaism representing the nearly 900 Reform Jewish congregations across North America. There will also be a musical presentation from renowned Latin guitarist Johannes Linstead. Local mayors, MPs, MPPs and members of the interfaith community are expected to be in attendance. The congregation's origins date back to 1912. That year, Morris Burke left Romania, went on to meet and marry his wife Rose, and then settled in Oakville in 1922. Also in 1912, Michael Brown (Marcos Zuckerman) left Bukovina, married his wife Becky and later settled in Oakville in 1923. The two women, both pregnant, met at a baby clinic in town and the idea of a Jewish congregation was conceived. In 1955, the group founded the OakvilleTrafalgar Jewish Community Centre with 15 families and a plan to have poker nights for the dads, celebrate Jewish holidays together and have religious instruction for the children. As the congregation grew and looked for land to build a synagogue, the Jensen family of Oakville offered the far end of what was then called Morrison Farms. Donations came in and the building was finished in 1962 at which point the congregation was renamed Beth El, meaning house of God. By the late 1960s, the congregation had grown to 100 families and hired a Rabbi. It hosted events in Oakville, including a bazaar, bingo and fashion show in Oakville Arena's Pine Room. By the 1980s, the synagogue was looking to expand and merged with the Burlington Jewish Group to form what is now Shaarei-Beth El. The synagogue was renovated to the current 5,000-sq.-ft. facility the congregation uses today. In recent years, the building was renovated and retrofitted further so that it is eco-friendly outside and beautiful and warm inside.
