Gigs galore for local folk-rock group Tater Vox is an eight-member local band that plays "urban electric folk-rock with an edge," according to founding member Scott Mills. "We're not really folk because we rock it up pretty good. But we are kind of folk because we have some acoustic bass numbers that are very folky, and we started out folky. And we kind of made our base the White Oak Folk Club," says Mills. "When we go,, and perform there as a group, it's not quite their type of music that we do. We're more for a festival with a family type atmosphere." However, he adds, the White Oak Folk Club has provided a number of musical con nections for Tater Vox, including that of sound engineer Bruce Chambers. "We have raised charity money with the assistance of equipm ent donated by the White Oak Folk Club." adds Mills. The band is currently tuning up for a number of summer gigs around the province - Toronto, London, Hamilton, Caledon, Chatham and Milton - where they will also play some standard cover tunes made famous by such artists as Neil Young, 54.40, 4 Non Blondes, Ray Charles and Robert Cray. Mills says he and the other seven musicians are looking for ward to playing at Toronto's^.360 Club (Queen Street, just east of Spadina Avenue) from midnight to close on Friday, Aug. 10 and at The Hudson, 233 King St. E. in Hamilton from 10:30 p.m. to close on Thursday, Aug. 23. Mills says the group's name, Tater Vox, has little to do with its eight current members, but origi nates with a singer who sang with Mills in his earlier days but never joined the band. "Her nickname was Tater and when w e'd plug her microphone into the board, w e'd always label her mike as Tater's vox," he explains. "So, we decided that Tater Vox was kind of a cool band name. There's actually a picture of her on the website." The group, however, began two years ago when two o f its five Oakville members Mills and Randy Broten - started playing gui tar and singing together a couple of times a week. In fact, one of the band's signature songs is an original called Yolanda, celebrat ing the band's humble beginnings in M ills' basement on Yolanda Drive. It wasn't long before Angela Lombardo, from M ississauga, and another Oakville native, Val Strickler - now lead singers with Tater Vox - turned the duo into a quartet. Then Strickler introduced the group to John Hall, who became its male lead singer. While recording a demo CD in February, 2000, Tater Vox welcomed producer/song writer Urmas Soomet into the band as its bass guitar player, and soon after singer/song writer Garry Rutherford joined the folk group on keyboard. That summer, drummer Bob Hatcher added his percussion and drumming skills to the mix. Then when Broten decided to devote his creative endeavours to Bronte Sound Project full-tim e, lead guitarist Sean Donnelly stepped in, maintaining the delicate balance of eight, which is complemented by sound and lighting technicians Bruce Chambers and Dave Merkel. Each band member has contributed to the songwriting, with five having writing credits on the songs the group performs. These orig inal songs were recently recorded on an 11track CD. titled Evolution, which will be ready for release in the fall. "The band features three lead vocalists, who are very effective at producing our sig nature melodies and harmonies," says Mills.
