www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, January 14, 2016 | 28 Free talk on dementia coincides with Alzheimer's Awareness Month In recognition of January being Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Canada, Acclaim Health is offering a free talk on communicating with persons with dementia. "Many people are uncertain of how to interact with a person with dementia because of the stigma attached to the disease. It's easy to forget that those with dementia still have thoughts and feelings," said Sandi Robinson, Acclaim Health caregiver education co-ordinator. "This talk aims to remind caregivers and loved ones of this, and to provide detailed strategies and approaches on how to connect with the persons with dementia." The event is set for Thursday, Jan. 28, from 7-9 p.m., at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Rd. According to Acclaim Health, the dementia communication talk is a way to support the many caregivers who are trying to navigate the dementia needs of their loved one. The not-for-profit agency also matches up volunteer visitors with those experiencing memory loss to provide companionship while also provid- Health F U N "Connected to your Community" D I N G F O R C C S ing caregivers with a much-needed break. Its adult day programs in Oakville and Burlington have become known as "the club" because of the thriving and inclusive atmosphere that has been created for their clients, according to Acclaim Health. The caregiver education co-ordinator also facilitates support groups and education sessions. Rate of dementia diagnoses growing "The rate of dementia diagnoses continues to grow, and with that so does the demand for dementia care services," said Patricia Blakeley, Acclaim Health director of Community Support Services. "We do our best to have a strong presence in the community so that we can keep spreading the word about what we do and how we can help. We want people to know they are not alone on this journey." To register for the free talk, visit www. acclaimhealth.ca and click on the Caregiver Support and Education link under the Alzheimer Services tab, or call Sandi Robinson at 905-8479559. The Canadian Cancer Society was recently presented with a cheque for $18,985. The funds were raised during the Budds' Feast of the Fairways, which was held in August 2015.
