What Is a Self? What Is a Self? is a new suite of works by London, Ont.-based artist Sky Glabush and runs until March 13 at Oakville Galleries' Gairloch Gardens location, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E. In his latest exhibit, Glabush takes over the former estate house of Gairloch Gardens with large-scale weavings and mixed-media sculptures. "Weaving appeals to Glabush as creative labour that is both meditative and time-consuming; often working with fibres still wet with dye, his subdued colours bleed into one another," stated a media release. "Woven swatches also adorn the surfaces of his modular sculptures, which are assembled from materials ranging from found wooden chairs to building materials, such as plaster, concrete, plywood, and tile." Born in 1970, in Alert Bay, B.C., Glabush currently teaches at Western University and lives in London, Ont. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta. "Over the past two decades, Sky Glabush has drawn on a wide variety of practices -- including painting, drawing and sculpture -- to work through pressing questions of identity, history and labour," according to the release. Glabush's work is in many public collections including the Canada Council Art Bank, McIntosh Gallery, Museum London, Mackenzie Art Gallery, Mendel Art Gallery, and the Bank of Montreal. The Green of Her The Green of Her, which is a selection of works drawn from Oakville Galleries' permanent collection, runs until March 6 at Centennial Square, 120 Navy St. It features the works of Valérie Blass, Therese Bolliger, Wendy Coburn, Angela Grauerholz, Isabelle Hayeur, Deirdre Logue, Liz Magor, Luanne Martineau, Naoko Matsubara, Tricia Middleton, and Paulette Phillips. "The Green of Her consider(s) the practice of camouflage, mapping out landscapes in unlikely sources -- a fur muff, a floral carpet, the folds of a napkin -- to imagine what new forms of life could be concealed within them," according to Oakville Galleries. "Throughout the exhibition, both the mundane realities of the home and the murky depths of the subterranean appear as strange and hybrid spaces, offering the potential for solitude and protection from external threat." The exhibits' openings will take place at Centennial Square from 2:30-3:30 p.m., followed by a reception at Gairloch Gardens members are welcome and all music is included in membership fee.
