Strobele finishes third, qualifies for world's By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR Claudia Strobele has earned herself a ticket to next year's world sailing championships. And she won't have to travel far, at all, with next year's Europe division being hosted by the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club. And that was, in fact, where the Canadian national qualifier was held, over the Aug. 25/26 weekend, providing a little dry run-through, for next year's world's. It was pretty much thumbs-up for Strobele with a third place finish. That's not quite as good as the second place finish she garnered last year. On the other hand, the top four qualified directly into next year's world's, so her top priori ty, to qualify, was achieved. "I was hoping for second but the top two sailors both raced an excellent regatta so I am pleased with third," said Strobele. "Fourth and fifth place were close behind. "I was in fourth place going into the final race and it was a very exciting and extremely close race. I had a good start and sailed a conservative race and managed to finish third in that race which was enough to secure me third place over all in the championship. "The race came down to a difference of one foot on the finish line after a 50 minute race in windy -- 18 knot -- conditions." Strobele kicked off the summer at the world championships in Portugal (which she had quali fied for by placing second at last year's nationals). She finished as die second best Canadian, which, to be honest, wasn't saying much. "All the Canadians were in the bot tom half of the 130 boat fleet," she explained. "I finished in the 80's. "Canadians had trouble with the conditions, being very different from any we've encountered in our training throughout North America. "Being on the open ocean at the south of Portugal, the waves built up to 15 feet in height. "Our boats being only 11 feet, it was tough to get over them." Next year, though, it should be Strobele and her fellow Canuck sailors with the edge. "The world's being in Hamilton next year gives us a big home court advantage -- because we have lots of time to train in the local conditions before the event. "For geographic reasons the winds are unusually shifty in Hamilton -- and we have already started training to help us leam the patterns of those wind shifts." With all her dedication to the sport, Strobele has managed to finish up four years at Queen's in engineering physics. This summer, amidst all her training and rac ing, she continued to work part time with one of her professors "doing work in ultra sound." And this week, it's right back to the books, as she was successful in getting into graduate school at the University of Toronto where she will take medical physics. "I'm looking forward to that because I'll be able to specialize in an area of particular interest to me." At the same time, the Oakville Trafalgar High School grad will start training for next year's world's in Hamilton. "Training for the fall and winter will be a big part, focusing on endurance and weight training," she said. "We had a sailor from Denmark (top 10 in the world) come to Canada to train with us for two weeks. It was evident that we need to improve our strength and endurance if we want to improve our international standings." Sailing can be a very demanding sport, she said. "It's a lot of core strength. A lot of sailors have lower back injuries. So core strength, upper body and really everything. It's an endurance sport -- people don't really realize that. The term is hiking. You're always counteracting the force of the sail because the wind is trying to blow your boat over, essentially. "So in order to counteract, you have to hang out of the side and that really works your quads and your abs because you're out like a flat board. And you have to do that and sustain that for about half an hour so it becomes an endurance sport for that reason." 2001 Dodge Durango S1T+ 4.7LV 8, leaffifStraw^fSSfrar air u p g rad ed 4x4system . 4w heel A B S , trailer to w . $0 Downpayment $2500 Downpayment $3500 Downpayment $550.21/m th $494.69/m th $472.4r n t 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 1 Power sunroof, leatlw, E " {tm m n iito ili md much more. 60th Anniversary badgin; & floor mats. $0 Downpayment $2500 Downpayment $3500 Downpayment $576.44mtti S521.9ftr^ $500.20/nun 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan P o w e rw idow s i locks, i steering erasec o n tro l. ¥ alloy utials, C ffp la jw , a u a a sand more. $0 Downpayment $2500 Downpayment $3500 Downpayment $427.40 m $370.82/mtt< $348.iamth 2001 JeepGr.i Power windows and door locks, tilt, cruise, CO, keyless entry, security alarm, trailer package slid more. $0 Downpayment $2500 Downpayment $3500 Downpayment $496.8lmt $442.34'm t t i S420.56.mtn The Cutting Edge Hockey & Skating Academy Gliders Learn to Skate Classes for 4-9 year-olds Mini-Season Team Games for 4-6 year-olds · provides beginning skaters with · builds on skills acquired in Skills & fundamentals to become Drills programme independent and confident on the · Regular schedule of games based ice - limited or no skating on house-league format provides experience. players with experience of team · CSA approved hockey helmets are play mandatory.
