Blades rookies give good accounting By Neil Becker SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Blades laboured to a 4-2 loss to high ly touted Newmarket Hurricanes in provincial junior A pre-season action at Ice Sports Oakville on Monday. But with 11 rookies in the line-up, Blades coach Jay Anderson was not at all displeased. "We played well and saw a lot of good things hap pen tonight," he said. With several veterans still in major junior camps, it provided an opportunity for the rookies to make their case for making what is expected to be a veteran Blades line-up this year. And they didn't disappoint. One such rookie is Oakville native Scott Russell. "He has a bit of a mean streak to him, but is cool under pressure," said coach Anderson. "We don't want to put him in a situation where he will fail. Confidence is the key for success." Russell has worked hard and is looking forward to the opportunity. "I've worked hard all summer by skating three days per week and working in the gym six days per week on legs and strength training. "I know that as a rookie, I'll have to wait and earn my position." The Blades opened the scoring only to have Newmarket bounce back with four straight goals before the Blades ended the scoring, late in the second to make it 4-2, which held up throughout the scoreless final frame. Geoff Asseltine scored the first Oakville goal, pouncing on a juicy rebound left by a wrap around attempt by Chris Riddell. Tyler Cann scored the Blades' second goal. The play and intensity level resembled a playoff game in spring not a September pre-season tilt, as both teams would not give an inch. Late in a scoreless third period, the Blades ran into a defensive wall known as the Newmarket Hurricanes as they clogged the middle and limited the scoring opportunities for Oakville. Last year was a tough rebuilding year for the they'll get a debriefing on Monday's game and then get ready for the sixth annual junior pre-season tour nament which they are hosting at Ice Sports. ANNUALTOURNEY The Oakville Blades are once again a major host of the sixth annual pre-season junior hockey tourney on tap from Thursday to Sunday (Sept. 6-9). This year's tourney has 36 teams with 12 teams at each of the three host locations, the other two (besides Oakville) being Bramalea and Fort Erie. As usual the tourney has attracted a host of junior teams from south of the border as well as throughout Ontario. While it may be pre-season, teams have plenty of incentive to play their A-game with many NHL and OHL scouts and executives, as well as NCAA recruiters, in attendance.
