Halton Multicultural Council connects new year, volunteers and newcomers HMC Connections is giving the Oakville community a glimpse into the traditions of other countries at its New Year's Around the World and Volunteer Appreciation event next Thursday (Jan. 28). The event features booths that represent at least 11 countries and areas , including: Canada, Africa, Pakistan, India, the Philippines, China, Afghanistan, and Romania, as well as traditions from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, among others. A special presentation will be made on Syrian culture. Approximately, 150 volunteers assist clients, who are newcomers to Canada, through programs, such as a conversation circle, seniors and youth activities, of ce help, language aid and special events. The cultural event takes place at the HMC Connections Oakville of ce, 1092 Speers Rd., from 4:30-6:30 p.m. HMC is a community-based settlement agency providing programs and services to immigrants and refugees.
