Fire on bus in transit depot No one was injured in a fire that broke out in an Oakville Transit bus parked in a storage garage at the Oakville Transit Facility on Wyecroft Road early Thursday morning. Oakville firefighters were called to the scene just after midnight at the Oakville Transit maintenance, storage and administration facility and quickly contained the flames. Oakville Transit staff was allowed back into the facility around 1 a.m. after smoke was cleared. 13 | Friday, January 22, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Barry Cole, director of Oakville Transit Services, said his staff discovered and reported the fire that started in a cooling fan at the back of the bus, which was among more than 100 buses parked in the garage for the night. "If you're going to have a fire on a bus, you want it to be when no one is on it," he said, adding, thankfully, it's a rare occurrence. The vehicle sustained minor damages and is being repaired. Damage was minor when an bus caught fire while in the Oakville Transit Facility Wednesday night. | photo by Andrew Collins - special to the Beaver UWO faces $70K campaign shortfall The United Way of Oakville (UWO) is appealing to the public to help it raise the $70,000 shortfall it's facing as it attempts to reach its $4.31-million goal by Feb. 9. The agency, which helps fund approximately 52 programs at 31 local, socialservice agencies, issued a plea Thursday (Jan. 21) to community businesses and members to "dig a little deeper" in hopes it can close that gap. "Our loyal donors are continuing to make their annual gifts, and we are so appreciative of their incredible generosity," said Brad Park, UWO CEO, in a press release, "but this year we need extra support. We are asking everyone in the community to step in." Rob Lister, the 2015 campaign chair, said it's a challenging time for the economy and that's having an impact on the campaign. "As many businesses and individuals tighten their finances to safeguard themselves and their employees from a volatile market, we are seeing significant decreases in their charitable giving," said Lister, president and CEO of Oakville Enterprise Corporation/ Oakville Hydro. A shortfall in funds could mean cuts to the UWO programs that support 34,000 people in Oakville. Park said the programs are vital to the health of the Oakville community. "They're services that help kids grieving the loss of a parent; they provide support to seniors living with advanced dementia, and help the people who, because of the challenges in our economy, are not able to feed their families," he said.
