Medical centre opens on new OTMH campus by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 11 | Thursday, January 28, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com With the new hospital just opened, health care delivery in town received more good news Tuesday with the official opening of the North Oakville Medical Centre. The 80,000 square foot, four-storey facility is located at 3075 Hospital Gate, just a hundred metres from the entrance of the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). It features ground-floor retail and a variety of medical services and offices on other floors. "It's a full-service medical building. It has essentially all the services a medical office building would need, so a lab, x-ray, pharmacy, physio, chiro and even things like dermatology, audiology, optometry, ophthalmology," said Ben Swirsky, vice president of business development for Torgan Group, which developed the centre in conjunction with MPI Group. "Any service a GP (General Practitioner) or family physician would refer you to, you will find in this building and you can't ask for a better location." Construction of the centre began in fall 2014 with doctors starting to see patients there early last October. The land on which the $20 million facility sits is being leased from the hospital. During the grand opening ceremony, those present heard from Halton MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health The new North Oakville Medical Centre opened Tuesday just 100 metres from the entrance of the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. It features ground-floor retail space and a variety of medical services and office on the remaining three floors. | submitted photo and Long-Term Care Indira Naidoo-Harris who called the facility the realization of a vision. "This really is an impressive facility. This medical centre is state-of-the-art. It offers just about everything under one roof, from medical care and lab services to retail and office services," she said. "You could see a doctor, do your banking, and grab lunch all at one time. It is one-stop shopping... That's great because in the end it means Oakville residents will be able to spend more time with their families than on the road." Russell Jacobson of MPI Group said he hoped the facility, which has such unique features as a living wall (a wall covered with plants) at the entrance, would be less like a medical office and more like a home to the thousands of patients who attend over the years. Eli Swirsky of Torgan Group called the building "exceptional" and noted he was proud of his company's role in developing it. Halton Healthcare Vice President of Redevelopment Bill Bailey said the North Oakville Medical Centre is an important part of the vision Halton Healthcare has for the area. "We wanted to create with, and for, the community a distinctive centre of health care excellence that provides the highest quality of clinical patient-centred care for the community within an innovative environment that supports the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the community," said Bailey. "The North Oakville Medical Centre is a vital part of that vision and today, with the services it will provide, in addition to those of the hospital: outpatient laboratory testing, outpatient pharmacy, physicians offices, it will become a part of that vision for the community." Halton Healthcare President and CEO Denise Hardenne said she was excited to have the facility on the hospital campus and noted it complements the hospital and Halton Healthcare's vision for the new OTMH. "The design and location really tie in to really support patients and allow them to access physicians in a timely way and access lab services and pharmaceuticals in complement to any services they may be receiving at the hospital," she said. Tenant space remains available but Swirsky said, "Since the hospital opened it has just been a zoo. My phone has been ringing off the hook with leasing and sales enquiries. With the amount pedestrian and vehicular traffic the hospital gets, we are going to fill the rest of the space in no time."
