Morden Public School students were connecting with their peers around the world today (Thursday, Jan. 28), as they took part in a global learning experience. Over the course of 24 hours, they are contributing to edcamp Global Classrooms in numerous ways while also learning about projects in different countries that cover topics from cyber bullying and mental health, to bringing history to life by using technology. Open to students around the globe Edcamp Global Classrooms is an online learning experience open to students and teachers around the world. Using a variety of platforms like Google Hangout, Twitter Chats, Periscope, and Voxer, contributors present educational projects that aim to engage and share knowledge with others. W.H. Morden French teacher Steve Morrison, one of the organizing teachers behind edcamp, told the Oakville Beaver last week the event fosters and encourages sharing and learning in an open environment. Having taken part in similar learning experiences offered to teachers, he said it was an experience like no other and he wanted to share it with students. Over the past few months he's been preparing his students to take part. All four of his Steve Morrison Grade 8 French classes have prepared French poetry based on global issues. "We actually researched a bunch of lingo and vocab, then I had the kids write six poems about whatever global issue they wanted," he said. Most of the students' first five poems cover the issues, but in their final sixth poem, solutions are presented. Morrison, who has been teaching at Morden 17 years, said with the help of a former student, Liam Kirkpatrick, now in Grade 10 at Abbey Park High School, the students were filmed see Students on p.15 presented by JAN 26 to FEB 11 ABBEY ARMS GlEn ABBEY'S OnlY AuthEntic BRitiSh PuB!
