Volunteers sought for Earth Week Clean up With winter soon to be melting into spring, residents are being encouraged to get their hands dirty for the 25th annual Earth Week Clean Up of Natural Sites. The event, organized by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) and sponsored by the Town of Oakville's Parks and Open Space Department, invites people to help clean up the lakefront, parks, trails and other green space Saturday, April 23 from 9-11 a.m. Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers helped remove 3,900 kilograms of garbage from 43 locations throughout Oakville. OCCPEHR of cials hope more people will cover more ground this year. "There are many new neighbourhoods and several signi cant green spaces that need to be added to the clean up in 2016," stated Stephen Dankowich, executive director of OCCPEHR, in a press release. OCCPEHR is looking for people to act as Clean Up coordinators in new areas. "There are several speci c neighbourhoods where we are looking for new coordinators, including any new development around Dundas Street, near Coronation Park and Petro Canada Park in the southwest, Lancaster Woods, trails around the Glen Abbey and River Oaks Recreation Centres, Winston Woods and Iroquois Shoreline Woods at Upper Middle Road and Grand Boulevard," he said. Since 1992, 76,000 students and residents have participated in Earth Week Clean Up, the largest community-wide Clean Up in Canada during Earth Week.
