The 21st annual event event drew 1,125 people - 1,073 participants and 52 volunteers, and raised $75,000, reports event co-ordinator Ralph Robinson. "The people were very supportive," he said. "This is an all-time record for O akville's town site on run day." The huge crowd stood motionless under warm sunny skies at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, the start and finish o f the Terry Fox Run. Before firing the starter's pistol, Oakville MP Bonnie Brown spoke o f hope and optimism in times of trouble. `T h ese days when hope and optimism are in short supply, when trouble is hanging over us, the best thing Canadians to do is to keep doing the good things we always do," said Brown reflecting on last w eek's tragedy. `T oday's event is one of these good things. I thank you for participating in the Terry Fox Run. By being here you are giving hope and optimism to all those Canadians who are affected by cancer." Lee Scott, a fitness instructor at Glen Abbey, asked participants to hold up a peace sign while doing their warm-up exercises. "I know there are some heavy hearts in light of last w eek's tragedy," said master o f ceremonies Frank Cooney, assistant director o f recreation, cul ture and facilities for Oakville Parks & Recreation. At last report more than 5,000 people are miss ing or dead, resulting from the twin 110-story tow ers o f the World Trade Center being struck by two aircraft hijacked by terrorists. "I would like to ask for a moment's silence to reflect on the horrific tragedy that occurred with our neighbours, the United States of America, this past week," said Cooney. "Our prayers and thoughts and hearts are with the families and the victims, and those still await ing word. It's events like this that bring our com munity closer together." O ther speakers dispensed with their traditional greetings, and reflected on the tragedy. Councillor Jody Sanderson, speaking on behalf o f M ayor Ann Mulvale, said "it's been a difficult and tough week, "It was a tough time for many of you to decide whether to join this Run, but at some point you had to get back to your regular lives," she said, noting most people were glued to their TV sets last week as news of the tragedy unfolded. Sanderson helped distribute Terry Fox Run T- shirts to the first 600 registrants. `Terry Fox would be proud to see you here despite last w eek's tragic events," said Councillor Allan Elgar, representing Halton Region chair Joyce Savoline. "Terry Fox once said: "I ju st wish people would realize that anything's possible if they try, that dreams are made if people try.' He would want you to be here." Dream, a four-member vocal group from St. Thomas of Aquinas Secondary School, entertained at the start of the event. Photos by Peter C.
