Disaster adds relevance to exhibit By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR hui-Bo W ang turned 41 on Sept. 11. H ow ironic that the M ontreal-based artist, w ho recently opened his ex hibition Sunrise O ver Tiananm en Square at O akville G alleries, celebrated a birthday on the day so m any died in N ew York City and W ashington. But it's not O sam a bin Laden w ho is the co-star in W ang's docum entary, it is M ao Tse-Tung. The star o f the film, w hich was nom inated for an A cadem y Award in 1999, is Wang him self, giving a personal account o f the rise of C om m unism and, ultim ately, the C ultural Revolution in China. But to C anadians, his life is special, and his fdm lets them know w hat it was like to grow up in a C om m unist country, adoring its leader to the point w here he deified him and, as a young boy, participated in the stoning o f a dead baby because its death was a sign o f corruption. W ang's grandfather, a m em ber o f the C om m unist party w hen it w as first established in China, was a high-ranking officer in the "new C hina." His father, w ho follow ed suit, attracted suspicion and attem pted suicide w hen W ang was ju st a boy. So, W ang received his training as a com m unist at hom e and at school, but his artistic training and inspira tion was developed in a neighbourhood library, w hich closed in 1966 when the C ultural R evolution began. "T he W est represented darkness," he says in his film, (See `As a youngster' on page B4) OAC Film Festival features fabulous flicks The O A C Film Festival is set to open its sixth season w ith a new lineup and new venues.
