The Chinese aster is an annu al, has double flowers and is named callistephus chinensis. There is a wide variety of true aster species, the most popular 15 range from the 1 ft. alpinus to the 7 ft. tararicus. Most are hardy to Zone 2 (the Arctic). Some dwarf varieties used for the front of the border are from the dumosus species and are from 10 ins. to 15 ins. high. "Anneke' has red-pink flowers, 'Apollo ' double white and `Lady in Blue' deep rusty pink. A. latifolus is taller at 18 in. and has dark foliage `Lady in Black' is compact with pink flowers. 'Prince' has many hot pink-centred flowers. The A. novae-angliae species have a selection at 18ins.tall, 'Purple Dome' isacom pact plant with deep purple flowers. `Alert' is 12 ins. with ruby red flowers. A x frikartii, are 3 ft. hybrids which have won many awards for their large flowers and long-blooming period. `Flora' s Delight' is an 18 in. lilac flower dwarf. `Monch,' was selected as the aster for `The best 100 Flowers for the Ontario Garden.' Branched stems carry a mass of 2 in. daisies with blue petals and yellow centres. It is the preferred aster in most flower selections. `Wonder of Staffa' is older with clear blue flowers, an earlier bloomer. Harrington's Pink,1 has 4 ft. stems and salmon pink flowers with yellow centres. Asters are in flower now, so selection is as easy as visiting local garden centres. A top performer is solidago rugosa, `Fireworks.' Small flowers on curved threadlike panicles, created a fireworks effect on 54 in. plants starting in midSeptember to late October. The lacey leaves were bur gundy in the spring turning to dark green in summer. It had clumping roots and resistence to mildew. `Golden Fleece' at 24 ins. was another four-star selection. It has a long-blooming period to October with compact leaves topped by airy floral displays. 'Baby Sun ' and `Goldbind' are similar in size at 28 ins., with the blooming period from July to September.
