Journey was all the fun By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR O akville's U-17 boys rep soccer team had their amazing Ontario Cup run come to an abrupt end in S unday's cham pionship gam e, losing 6-0 to M ississauga Dixie. They say half the fun is getting there. But for Oakville it pretty much accounted for all o f the fun. Needless to say, there was not too much about Sunday's Ontario Cup championship game they will want to file away in their memory banks -- save perhaps the ceremonial marching on to the field. Such was M ississauga's dom ination, that Oakville goalie G raham Belovay was his team 's best player. Their Ontario Cup run, on the other hand, was as memorable as it was improbable, and that's what coach Phil Iafrati hit upon after the game. "I told them they deserved to get to the final. It looks like they didn't deserve to be here but they did. They played well enough to get here. They deserve to be going up there and getting their (sil ver) medals." The team was in turmoil even before the season began with the original coaches leaving and many o f the players following suit. Iafrati, a respected and longtime coach at theOakville Soccer Club -- who this year was hon oured with a lifetime membership by the club as well as being inducted into the Oakville Sports Hall o f Fame -- agreed to take on the team, along with co-coach Bob Iarusci. This, despite the fact that Iafrati -- a veteran of many Ontario Cup finals and national champi onship tournaments -- continued to honour his commitments to his own U -l 1 Blue Stars team. The U - ll Blue Stars, unlike the U-17 team, · * were highly favoured in their League and Cup campaigns -- and they came through. But more on that team later. The U-17 team 's tribulations continued as late as June when their two strikers decided to spend the summ er in Europe. "So from June, on, w e've really had no strikers on the team," said Iafrati. "W e've gone through the season with 14 play'ers -- that's all I had try out for the team, basical ly " They were good enough to com pete in the province's top league -- but, not surprisingly, ended up in last place. But from out o f all this, they arose, Phoenix like, for their remarkable Ontario Cup run, with wins over Woodbridge Strikers, 2-0, in the semifi nal; over W indsor Nationals, 1-0, in the quarterfi nals; and over North York CS Azzurri, 5-1, in the preliminary round. M ississauga Dixie, by contrast, until the cham pionship games, had rung off three consecutive slim 2-1 victories over O ttawa Capital United, North York CS Azzurri `84 and North York Hearts. "They (Oakville) major over achieved to get to the Ontario Cup final," agreed coach Iafrati. The turning point in the game seemed to be at 2-0 when Oakville bounced one off the crossbar. "If that would have gone in, it would have given our team a big lift," agreed coach Iafrati. "They came dow n five minutes later and made it 3-0. A nd that w ouldn't have happened. It would have been 2-1 and we would have been playing a little bit harder." P L A Y E R S : Graham Belovay, M ark Bemardi.
