THURSDAY, APRIL 02, 2015 Train derailment exercise was a success THE NEW TANNER 3 PLANNED CRISIS: This leaking tanker was part of a planned exercise implemented by Halton Hills Fire department on Monday afternoon in which consisted of a derailed train car leaking sulphuric acid and an impact with a car containing a family of four. Traci Gardner photo By: Dawn Brown The Town of Halton Hills' emergency planning exercise was a "resounding success," said Harry Olivieri, Deputy Chief Prevention and Public Education. The simulation, which took place Monday, had in excess of 30 people actively participating at the live site on Halton Hills Drive, and another 30 at the tabletop portion at the Emergency Operation Centre located at t e fire de artment headquarters. "It was an event that all participants felt went well from beginning to end," Olivieri said. The live simulation consisted of a derailed rail car leaking sulphuric acid and an impact collision with a family of four trapped in the vehicle. Crews had to contain the leak, protect ground water and the public as well as mitigate the number of issues that would affect the community in such an event. The incident considered the necessity of evacuating and sheltering residents and businesses within 800m of the event. In such a case, police would go door to door to inform residents, information would be available on the Town's website and Twitter feed and the ommunication otification System--an internet based product which auto calls residents within a s ecific location would have been put to use. This scenario was chosen as Halton Hills as significant rail transport through town, and this product is transported through the community regularly. Olivieri stated that the team's mitigation of the leaking product, and protecting the groundwater and public were among some of the most successful aspects of the exercise, as well as aspects covered by the emergency control group at the tabletop exercise, who navigated the event with the available planning guides. The exercise, which was a part of the town's annual compliance requirements to the Ontario Emergency Management and Civil Protections act, took six month of planning with Canadian National Railway. Oliveri stated the town would definitely do another large scale exercise next year and possibly smaller ones before then. SUITING UP: Members of the Halton Hills Fire Department donned their `Haz Mat' suits as part of Monday's planned crisis exercise of a train/car impact and a hazardous spill of sulphuric acrid. Traci Gardner photos S T.
