The Paul Harris Fellowship award is given annually to those who demonstrate a strong commitment to helping people, locally and abroad. On Jan. 27, this year's award was handed out at a gala at the Oakville Conference Centre hosted by the Rotary Club of Oakville (RCO), Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar (RCOT) and Rotary Club of Oakville West (RCOW). "We would say Rotary lives in them, though they may not even be Rotarians. They really exemplify what Rotary stands for and that is `Service above self,'" said Ken Coulter, RCOT president and event emcee. The fellowship was created in 1957 and named after the club's founder, Paul Harris, an American lawyer. · · · Kathryn Patterson, Molly Burke, Jim Turriff, Stephen Cull, Tina Triano and Chuck Havill garnered the accolade this year. Robinson High School, transferring to IRHS in 1996. She taught English and special education, and in 2004, became coordinator of the high school's gifted program and advanced placement. Her students nominated her for the award, the "most wonderful moment... to know I am appreciated in that way," Patterson said. "I respect them so much and adore them so much. They've changed my life more than I could ever change theirs. They don't even know that. It's pretty incredible that they would do that." Since the 2007 launch of IRHS' Interact Club, Patterson has been its staff adviser and organized seven international service trips to help students perform local, national and global service. In March, Patterson and 12 students will travel to Costa Rica. So far, they've raised $3,500. "We will be working on reforestation and its natural environment to make sure it continues to be a self-sustaining community. The money we take to that community goes to young people to send them to school," said Patterson. see Honourees on p.13 ABBEY ARMS GlEn ABBEY'S OnlY AuthEntic BRitiSh PuB!
