www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, February 4, 2016 | 4 Oakville Arena redevelopment plans get official nod from council by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Plans to renovate Oakville Arena and Trafalgar Park are a step closer to reality. Monday night (Feb. 1), Oakville Town council officially approved staff recommendations to move forward with the first phase of design and construction. With little discussion ahead of the vote, Mayor Rob Burton stated in a press release last week, "Residents are extremely passionate about the redevelopment plans for Oakville Arena." "It's exciting to see this project move forward to council, bringing us closer to revitalizing and expanding the facility for future generations to enjoy," he said. Oakville Arena, located at 133 Rebecca St., was originally built in 1950 and has served as a community hub for a variety of activities for more than six decades. It's also one of only four remaining arenas in Ontario with a distinctive wooden truss roof system designed by Norman Otto Hipel, an Ontario politician and builder who patented the roof system in 1928. Town Recreation Services Senior Manager Michael Brennan told the Oakville Beaver Town staff is working closely with the architect and general contractor to have a "more detailed look" on what's been proposed through the preliminary design concept, highlighting some of the challenges and possible solutions for them. Options are on the table "Our first discussions have been centered around the wood trusses because that's the thing that's probably the biggest risk in the project," he said. "In the original master plan design we did with the first consultant, they were proposing that we put a roof over a roof, but that was only one idea. There may be other ideas, so we will be exploring all those kinds of things and how the site is interrelated because we're building a fire hall there and also attaching the seniors' centre to the arena." Retaining heritage truss structure While retaining the heritage wooden trusses is a priority for the project, the preliminary design concept includes reducing seating see Construction on p.17 February Special 8 oz AAA New York steak Served with potatoes, vegetables, garlic bread, and fried onions For $14.99 l r.
