B6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 12, 2001 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT No such thing as community theatre... (C o n tin u e d fro m p a g e B7) these new real-life roles have allowed her to bring a new "depth o f under standing" to M 'Lynn. Brokenshire says she's been acting since elem entary school, taking a break to raise her children, yet being reintroduced to theatre through those same children. "They got involved in community theatre and that was it - 1 started back. Once you sit in on a rehearsal again, you're struck and you never walk away," explains the 55-year-old. "I started again about 27 years ago and I started directing 12 years ago." With nothing but praise for Mustafa and his flexible directing techniques, Brokenshire says he inspires actors to do their best by working with the dynamics of the cast. "I think it's very important to be able to play in the rehearsal process. I have worked with directors who will not allow that. This is how they see it. And this is how they want it played," Mustafa explains. "I always compare it to coming to a canvas to paint. I want to bring the blues, the reds, the yellows, and the browns. I have no idea where I want them to go but I'm prepared because I know those are the colours I want to use." Brokenshire, one of the six colours used on his Steel Magnolias canvas, enjoyed the rehearsal process so much that she is almost disappointed that it is ending and the performances are beginning. "The performances are like the sprinkles on the icing of a cake," she says. "We already have the icing, we already have the cake. The perfor mances are the sprinkles because it's been such a rich experience for me." Now she is hoping that rich experi ence will translate into a similar expe rience for the audiences as they get to know the six women who will present ed the finished canvas. And she wasn't kidding when she said "better than the movie." She and Mustafa are adamant in their belief that there is no such thing as community theatre - only bad theatre and good theatre. And they are both willing to stand behind W.E.S.T.'s production of Steel Magnolias as one of the latter. "I have seen professional show s...paid big bucks to see them, and you walk away saying, `I know someone who could do a better job than that," ' says Mustafa. "It's like a good piece of bubble gum - you chew it for 10 minutes and the flavour is gone." "We're so lucky here in this area because there's such a wealth of the atre," Brokenshire adds. "You don't have to go to Toronto and pay 96 bucks a ticket to see good theatre." However, both believe that the Toronto mega-musicals do introduce people to theatre. And they are hoping that some of those first-timers will head on down to the Oakville Centre to see Steel Magnolias for a mere $17 a ticket, "with free parking." Steel Magnolias is on stage at 8 p.m. in the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts from Sept. 13 to 15 and again from Sept. 19 to 22, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sept. 16. Tickets are available at the Oakville Centre box office at 130 Navy St., 905-815-2021, weekdays from noon to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m. and two hours prior to a performance. Franziska Lang, owner o f "Thym e in a Basket", opened her doors almost three years ago, primarily as a gourmet gift: basket shop. Customers immediately loved this concept - both customizing and personalizing their gift baskets. From the beginnings, "T hym e in a Basket" has evolved into a browsers' paradise. Franziska, though still dedicat ed to her gift basket talents, has gradually and selectively added a wide array o f giftware and decorative home accessories. A mong the latter, sone o f the most striking items is her collection o f hand painted ceramic tiles. These beautiful and colourful tiles come in various sizes to adorn counter tops or walls - a wonderful addition to any home. Among the wide variety now offered are flavoured teas such as Grand Marnier, Pina Colada, Peach Apricot, Mango, Cream Earl Grey and M onk's Blend.
