Anand, a corporate law and governance expert, is the new J.R. Kimber Chair in Investor Protection and Corporate Governance at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. An Oakville resident, Anand has served previously on the boards of Oakville Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc., the Oakville Hospital Foundation and St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School. This is the first research chair for investor rights in North America, made possible through a gift from Hal Jackman, the former lieutenant governor of Ontario. A chair is the highest academic honour for scholars, and allows them to pursue research in a high priority area. "I am very grateful to Hal Jackman and the Faculty of Law at U of T (University of Toronto) for allowing me to hold the chair," says Anand. "My research in the area of investor protection and corporate governance will benefit enormously. I plan to examine both rights and remedies that investors can pursue when they have suffered fraud or abuse in the capital markets." The chair is named after J.R. Kimber, who wrote the foundational Report of the Attorney General's Committee on Securities Legislation in Ontario in 1965, which laid the foundation for Canada's modern securities regulatory regime. Canada's securities regulatory system has been criticized for not effectively deterring financial market abuses. The only difference is that, unlike consumers of other goods, such as groceries, the good that investors buy, for example securities, is intangible. This intangibility increases the importance of this area. Corporate law and governance expert Anita Anand Anita Anand crowdfunding, and high proportions of transactions in the lessregulated private markets, have also increased opportunities for investment fraud and created the need for new regulatory tools to protect investors. "We cannot and should not underestimate the importance of investor protection in today's capital markets," Anand said. Anand's research expertise focuses on capital markets regulation and corporate governance, capital-raising techniques, and systemic risk, as well as legal ethics and the corporation. Since 2010, she has served as academic director of the Centre for the Legal Profession, and in 2015 was appointed by Ontario's Minister of Finance to the Expert Committee to Consider Financial Advisory and Planning Policy.
