Local craft brewer applauds the new way of doing business continued from p.5 "If you look behind me here, it looks like it's always been here, like this is nothing new, but certainly it is something new. It's going to be a new experience when they (customers) start to walk through the grocery supermarket over the next few days and, all of a sudden, they come upon a beer cooler and realize they don't have to make an extra trip and they don't have to go to a Brewers Retail store and they can pick it up here." He added parents don't have to be worried about their kids getting their hands on alcohol because "all the reasons that we were given in the past, why we shouldn't do this, I think have been covered off very well and I'm very confident this is something that will become a routine part of our everyday life in Ontario and in Canada." The Longo's two Oakville locations are part of the first round of Ontario's commitment to make it more convenient for people to buy beer. The commitment will expand with the alcoholic beverage to be available at up to 450 grocery stores province-wide by 2019, which is roughly the same number of locations The Beer Store is currently operating in Ontario. The 58 locations selling six-packs will be monitored by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to ensure those participating grocery stores adhere to laws on the safe retail of alcohol. Rules include having designated sale areas and hours of sale, limitations to package sizes and alcohol content by volume, and rigorous social responsibility training for staff. Flynn said with such a vibrant craft beer industry in Ontario, at least 20 per cent of grocers' shelf space for beer has been dedicated to small brewers' products. Oakville-based Trafalgar Brewery owner Mike Arnold said the news bodes well for his business with his products already at 18 grocery store locations across Ontario, including both the Longo's locations. "This is a whole new channel and this is not taking away from our business in the LCBO or the Beer Store, this is a new channel that allows us to get our products in front of the consumer," he said, adding he applauds the Ontario government from stepping away from the status quo and allowing alcohol to be sold more conveniently.
