Author of Your Water Footprint to speak at Cdn. Club The Canadian Club of Halton Peel is hosting award-winning international environmental journalist Stephen Leahy Thursday, Feb. 18. Held at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd., the speaker event will feature Leahy discussing his book, Your Water Footprint: The Shocking Facts About How Much Water We Use to Make Everyday Products. Entire society runs on water "We don't realize our entire society runs on water. It doesn't run on oil," Leahy said in a media release. Currently celebrating its 30th season, the not-for-profit, volunteer-driven, Canadian Club of Halton Peel has been presenting guest dinner speakers on a wide range of subjects since 1986. The Uxbridge-based Leahy has been an independent journalist for more than 20 years, having written more than 2,000 articles on scientific and environmental topics around the world for National Geographic, the Guardian, New Scientist, Inter Press Service News Agency (IPS), Maclean's, the Toronto Star and other publications. "For many years he was the senior science and environment correspondent for the Rome-headquartered IPS, the world's largest not-for-profit global news agency," stated the release. "He is currently a fellow at the International League of Conservation Writers and a professional member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Writers' Union of Canada. He is also a member and the volunteer treasurer of a crowdfunded organization, Climate News Mosaic, a collaboration of environmental journalists from a dozen countries." Award-winning writer Leahy was a co-winner of the 2012 Prince Albert/United Nations Global Prize for Climate Change and Environment Reporting, while this past September in Ontario, the Fitzhenry Family Foundation presented him with the Lane Anderson Award for Best Science Writing in Canada in 2014 for Your Water Footprint. The book was also awarded Best Science Book at the 2015 Green Book Festival in the U.S. "Your Water Footprint reveals how water is essential to our way of life in ways we never imagined," stated the release. "While water usage continues to soar, shortages now affect more than three billion people, including millions of Americans and Canadians. A decade from now three out of five people will face water shortages." Registration for next week's event opens at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the speaker from 7-9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for Canadian Club members, $45 for non-members, or $20 for students. Reservations for the dinner can be made by e-mail to barrywylie1@ gmail.com, phone at 905-827-6302 or mail, cheques payable to the Canadian Club of Halton Peel, 283 River Side Drive, Oakville, L6K 3N3. Notifications of cancellations must be made by Tuesday, Feb. 16.
