With an extreme cold alert issued by Halton Region, temperatures are expected to dip to -24 C by Saturday night. A warm-up is in sight by Family Day, but the alert is in effect for the day. Lots of family-friendly activities are on tap, but residents, with a hankering to hit the ice, should head to an arena or outdoor rink, not a natural waterway. Our mild winter has not set the stage for skating on natural waterways, despite this frigid cold snap. That is evidenced as ice oats in Lake Ontario as Oakville Fire crews are pictured at Bronte Harbour, doing ice-rescue training Thursday. Despite the recent deep freeze, re of cials say the ice is not safe and hypothermia can set in within minutes if one falls into the frigid water. The re department has been out for most of this week with different crews training in the harbour. Under local bylaws, driver training exercises can be done on streets anywhere in Oakville, except for the area bounded by Upper Middle, Third Line, and Bronte and Lakeshore roads in Ward 1. "Keeping driving instructors from training students in this area is meant to keep traf c volumes at a reasonable level," said Jim Barry, senior manager of Oakville's Enforcement Services. Barry told the Oakville Beaver, this week's advisory came in response to a number of recent community complaints, which have prompted the Town to carry out focused enforcement in the area. Barry said the training is prohibited on roads in that area because there is already increased traf c there, as it is the designated driver exam route for the provincial Drive Test Centre that operates at 2370 Wyecroft Rd. "We are dedicated to keeping our streets safe for everyone," said Barry . To review Licensing Bylaw 2015-075, including a map of the prohibited driving instruction locations, visit www. oakville.ca.
