With its rose window top panel, the approximately 6-footby-20-foot window, dates back to the 1890s. It was restored using traditional hand-painted stained glass. | photo by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook. com/HaltonPhotog) Stained glass windows offer a glimpse into history continued from p.6 relationship to his people, which is often referred to in the Old Testament as the Shepherd and His sheep. Surrounding the main panel are many symbols significant within the church, including, at the very top of the arch, "a dove flying Heaven-ward indicating the Holy Spirit ascending to God to make intercession for us," the book states. It also has the Burning Bush, a symbol of the Presbyterian church, and a sheaf of wheat, symbolizing the bread in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. "It's interesting to dig into the history of it," said Browne. "The Marlatt family, they were friends of the Barclays, so when you look at the windows, there are all these little ties that have back stories to them that we're not always aware of." The restoration was done at a cost of $14,000. Browne said it wasn't exactly budgeted for, but it was important for the congregation to preserve and maintain the church's history. Carnall, a member of the church for more than 13 years, added members are generous when a need is identified. Just as they are stepping up to help support a Syrian family settle in Oakville, he said he knows the church will get the financial support it needs from its members for the restoration project. Browne noted the church is also preparing for larger renovations to its lower level in the coming years. "Just like any home, there's always something to be done," she said. "God's house is no different than your house. It needs constant attention and occasional renovations." It will be enhancing the space, making it more usable -- especially for non-profit, community groups in need of a place to meet. Changes will include making it more accessible. "We want it to be a welcoming, bright usable space for many years to come and so we've been taking our time in moving forward as to what it is actually going to look like," added Browne.
