www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, February 25, 2016 | 20 Teens learning to be good corporate citizens by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Some budding entrepreneurs from Oakville are learning how to be good corporate citizens. Oakville siblings Eric and Sarah Sheppard, along with about 20 other Grades 9-12 students in town, have started a company through a Junior Achievement (JA) program. Now , the youths plan to add a related good corporate citizenship role to their business by publishing a book to instruct school-aged children about the importance of washing your hands. JA is a not-for-profit organization that develops business education programs for students in Grades 9-12. Eric, a Grade 12 student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, is president of the company, Soque, which manufactures, markets and sells soaps, bath bombs and other bath items. After taking care of business over the past few months, company members decided to tackle their corporate and social responsibility in a "fun and creative way." They enlisted the help of Eric's sister Sarah to write and illustrate The Girl Who, Never , Ever Oakville's Eric Sheppard, left, is president of the Junior Achievement-sponsored startup Soque, which sells soaps and bath items. It's a colourful book that teaches schoolaged children about the importance of good health and hygiene. It's a cautionary tale about the importance of hand-washing, according to Sarah, who has written other children's books. The message is delivered through the story of a young girl named Penelope Rink and her misfortune when, despite top grades and supremely cool accomplishments, she discovers the consequences of never washing her hands. The book is to launch at the end of February. Funds to print it have been raised and donated through individuals and local businesses. About 14,000 books will be distributed to Grades 1, 2 and 3 students with the Halton District School Board. Eric said the company hopes to make a real difference in the community, especially during flu season. "We wanted to do something kind of unique," he said. "This is a creative way to go about giving back to the community and it also ties into our products -- soap, washing hands. It makes sense." see Experience on p.27 · · · · · · Sunday Evenings Karaoke Monday Night Poker Night Wednesday Night Trivia Family Pub Open for Lunch Sports Teams Welcome DIAMOND DIAMOND Voted Best Accountant by Oakville Beaver Readers for 9 Consecutive Years Proud supporter of the Oakville Rangers · Trip Advisor's highest rated Oakville pub Saturday Nights Live Entertainment This week featuring: High Rollers Oak Park Blv vd.
