The local dancers -- who live in Oakville and Mississauga -- qualified to compete in this year's championships held in Glasgow, Scotland. This will be the fourth time Glasgow has hosted the championships. It has previously been held in Belfast, London, Philadelphia, Boston and last year, for the first time in Canada, in Montréal. Competitors will be arriving from the U.S., Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Russia, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Japan and across Canada to showcase their skills in what is largely dubbed the "Olympics" of Irish dance. To help its dancers get to this year's championships, the local Irish dance school is hosting its Claddagh Ball fundraiser Saturday (Feb. 27) at Le Dome Banquet Hall, 1173 North Service Rd. E. The funds raised from the evening will go to- wards covering the costs of training, costumes and travel -- each dancer needs to raise around $2,000-$3,000. "It's a wonderful night of delicious food, fun dancing, memorable performances and an amazing silent auction," stated a media release. Anyone interested in attending or making a donation to the silent auction is asked to contact Barb Goggin at dance@goggin-carroll.com. Goggin is the school's co-founder along with Ryan Carroll, who was understudy to the lead in Riverdance and competed at the worlds 11 times in his youth. He was also one of the top five dancers in the five years he competed on the world stage and earned a second place medal when he was 15 years old.
