Anjum runs in Ward 2 to contribute to community by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, February 26, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An Oakville mother of three and community volunteer says she would be accessible, approachable and active for residents, if elected to the position of Ward 2 councillor. Shiba Anjum, a Ward 2 resident, who has called Oakville home since 2010, said she's joined the race for the municipal council position because she wants to contribute to the growth of her community. "Also, I want to set an example for my children, especially my daughters that you can do what you want to do as long as you know that you are responsible enough," said Anjum. "I want the people to know that we, as an immigrant community, are also an active partner in making our city a better place." The Ward 2 council seat has been vacant since former councillor Pam Damoff was elected MP of the new Oakville North-Burlington riding in last fall's federal election. Council has voted to fill the position through a by-election, which will take place April 11. Anjum said she has a strong background in the sciences and previously worked as a medical laboratory technician in her native India. She is now mother to three young children, runs a small business online, which promotes healthy and organic lifestyles, and is active in the community serving as a volunteer at Oakville and dropping off my kids at school, shopping at local stores and enjoying family activities in our various community parks or volunteering at the Oakville hospital. I am easily approachable," said Anjum. "People can come and seek whatever help I can give them. I'll be very happy to do that." Anjum said there are a number of issues facing the Ward 2 community with increasing traffic levels being a major one. She said she would also promote the creation of bike-friendly neighbourhoods and work to establish community-building activities that can bring together families and seniors. "Let us come together for some healthy living and eating activities," said Anjum. Another goal, she said, is to promote the Green Belt and the trails that are in Ward 2 so all families can enjoy them. Anjum is among 11 residents running for the Ward 2 council seat. Other contenders include: Ray Chisholm, Fraser Damoff, Hart Jansson, Chris Kowalchuk, Ruth Anne McAuley, Cheryle McCullagh, Julie McLeod, John Pilcher, Dirk Soeterik and Sean Neville. Shiba Anjum Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for the past two years. She has also served two years on Oakwood Public School's School Council where she has championed programs that promote healthy eating among children. Anjum said she is also an active member of the local Dar Foundation community centre, the Al Falah Centre and the Noor Ul Haram. She noted these community centres work hard to positively impact the community from offering food banks to helping Syrian refugees. "I will be one of those council members whom you can see on the street, picking up Whether you call it drywall, gypsum wallboard or sheetrock, it's all 100% recyclable to us. Documentation for LEED certification is available. Gypsum is a true closed-loop product, designed for your safety and to be infinitely recycled in to new drywall. 905-847-0520 www.nwgypsum.com Located just off the QEW at 2182 WYECROFT ROAD, OAKVILLE Established in 1997 Trafalgar Ridge Montessori School register for september 2016 New Patients Are ALWAYS Welcome Lower elementary program grades 1, 2, and 3 · Low teacher to student ratio · Enriched individualized curriculum · Enhanced French language instruction · Comprehensive Music and Physical Education programs · Evening & Weekend Appointments Available · Female Dentist Available · Same Day Appointments · Same Day Emergency · Walk-in Service · Family & Cosmetic Dentistry · Insurance Billed Directly · Digital X-Rays · Sedation for Children & Adults Call today to book your appointment A small school environment where all children thrive! 2379 trAfALgAr roAD, UNit 6 OAKVILLE · 905.257.5955 www.trms.ca admin@trms.ca Dr. Manchanda www.doctor4teeth.com 905-339-1666 627 Lyons Lane, Suite 100 Oakville, ON
