www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, February 26, 2016 | 10 Young members carry on tradition of community service continued from p.8 What he admires most is the ways in which each member dedicates his or her time. One member, he noted, uses his personal skills to refurbish old computers. He then gives them to families in need through Kerr Street Mission (KSM). The Oakville Lions Club members have been rolling up their sleeves to help out wherever they're needed in the community. They have also been hosting charity events for decades, including a weekly Cruze Night in the summer that features classic cars, bingo nights and an annual golf tournament. Lions Club delivers in Oakville Its through such events the group can deliver muchneeded funds to organizations, such as Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, Halton Women's Place, Halton police, Oakville Fire Department, the Salvation Army Oakville, Kerr Street Mission, Oakville Racing Canoe Club, Burl-Oak Canoe Club, Canine Vision Canada, Canadian Red Cross and the C.N.I.B. Camp for the Blind at Lake Joseph in Muskoka, to name a few. It also helped establish the Town's first public swimming pool on Felan Avenue and Lions Valley Park, which opened in 1967. Improvements to Trafalgar Park in the late 1970s and the band shell at Coronation Park in the early 1990s were also thanks to funding support from the Lions. Robinson, who was a past-president during 1973-74, said as a Lion, there's so much to be proud of, including the club's involvement in establishing the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, which calls Oakville home. Lions Foundation of Canada's mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them Dog Guides at no cost. community. Some of the things they've done are just incredible." He noted how they have been hard at work in the community helping with park clean-ups, book drives and occasionally serving breakfast at Kerr Street Mission. "It's a real positive," said Robinson. Changing with the times Changing with the times, the club has also been actively recruiting women to help with the work that it does. Jules Graham-Hood was the first woman to be sponsored by past district governor Lion Bill Allison in 2013 and has become an active member taking part in club barbecues and Cruze Nights. Having worked in the non-profit sector previously in the Oakville community, the Etobicoke resident said her beliefs align with the club's, and she loves its hands-on approach at helping out in the community. "I find they are truly compassionate about what they do," said Graham-Hood, noting the members, many of whom have been with the club for 30-40 years, truly love what they do and treat her with respect. "I think that's what made me fall in love with the club." She said everywhere you look in the community you'll see where a Lion has lent a hand. "They are very entrenched with the community," she said. Gross said although they have a wind range of members of all ages that are very engaged in the community, as it looks ahead to its future, the biggest challenge it faces is continuing to grow as the needs of the community continue to grow. It hopes to continue recruiting new members, both men and women, of all ages to help it continue the "grassroots" work it does in the community. For more information, visit www.oakvillelions.org. In recent years, it's also established an annual George Winnett Scholarship Award Program in honour of a long time Lions Club member and a Leo Club Program that gives young people an opportunity to serve their community while being mentored by Lions members. "This club formed two years ago and now has 35 members," said Robinson. "They go out and work in the India's Golden Triangle & the Sacred Ganges ACNE?
