Three games into the regular season, the defending champion Bishop Reding Royals handed the Cavs a 22-point loss. "We used that game as motivation," said King's Coleman Stucke. The Cavaliers went on to win their next 10 games to earn a rematch with Reding in Tuesday's Halton junior Tier 1 basketball final. Despite falling behind early, King's dominated the middle two quarters and then held off a late Bishop Reding surge to upset a Royals team that had won 18 straight dating back to last season, 66-59. "They beat us before but we felt like we had nothing to lose," said Godwin Ilumoka, who had a game-high 21 points. "We've worked hard; we just had to go out and play our best." King's admittedly didn't play its best in the opening quarter, but it also didn't let the game get out of hand. Reding led 15-8 through the opening quarter and quickly extended its lead to nine in the second. Ilumoka started to turn the tide with a steal and a couple of quick baskets. Stucke followed with a pair of three-pointers and Ilumoka capped a 19-4 run by putting away his own rebound. "We've grown by leaps and bounds as team since the first time we played (Bishop Reding). The kids have matured," said King's Christian Collegiate coach Wade Currie "For us, it was just a matter of getting through that first quarter." Cavaliers start second half with 20-6 run The break did nothing to stem the Cavs' momentum. Ilumoka scored the first seven points of the half and King's outscored Reding 20-6 over the first five minutes. Gabe Taneza did a good job of driving and drawing defenders before dishing to an open J.L. Morvan as King's lead grew to 17. "We just fed off our own momentum and kept pushing them," Stucke said. Reding slowly chipped away but still trailed by 12 with five minutes to play. The Royals would not let their title slip away easily, though. A 10-0 run got them within two with 1:34 left. An Ilumoka bucket and a key defensive stop by King's forced Reding to foul and the Cavaliers put the game away, Gurjaap Pannuun and Taneza going 5-for-6 from the line in the final minute. "Basketball has ups and downs. It's a game of runs," Currie said. "We needed to stay composed and I think we did that very well. It was a great game to be a part of." Stucke finished with 15 points for King's and Morvan was also in double figures with 11. Pannuun finished with nine and Taneza had six.
