Leading local delegation As she did last year, the resident of Milton will lead the delegation from the Canadian Federation of University Women's (CFUW) Oakville chapter at the event, which is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Examining the links The discussion at this year's event will primarily focus on the link between women's empowerment and sustainable development. "Last year's trip was a lifechanging experience," admitted Hayles. "First of all, how often does one get invited to attend sessions at the United Nations in New York? I was humbled and privileged to be able to represent women and girls to advocate for their most basic human rights, which are often neglected in a world where they are holding up half the sky. Feminism gaining support from men "Feminism is rightfully gaining support from wise men who support the `He for She' campaign," she added. Cheryl Hayles "It is rewarding to see men speak up for women on issues of equity and inclusion." She said this year's trip to the UN will be even more "intentional" because she is presenting at a parallel event on How Feminist Research Contributes to, and Enriches the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Hayles explained it is a partnership between the Canadian Federation of University Women and the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women.
