While many in Ireland look to the EU, educator looks to N.A. continued from p.13 Hopefully, this will expand their knowledge on the abilities of the aging population," said Garbutt. Janelle Parent, a third-year advertising and marketing communications student, is enjoying the program and hub project, she said, as she has an interest in international business. "It's really cool because we actually get to work with a group as if we were working in the real industry. It's a good experience because you're working with an international group of students with one client," said Parent. The 22-year-old noted her group is focusing on emerging trends. Parent said the teamwork is a good opportunity to "co-operate with different people because you never know who you're going to work with in the industry." "I hope to learn what to expect when you go to a job and get networking experience. I don't really know what I want to do, so it's a good opportunity to figure out where I want to focus my skills and what I want to lean towards in the field," said Parent. Payne said this would be a "very educational" experience for his students because many of them are only 18 and 19 years old. "It's a real client and it's an international and cultural issue. It's time differences, but it's all a learning experience for them," said Payne, noting his students will place a "bit more" emphasis on the website. The project is important for ITT Dublin because it offers collaboration with a country outside of the European Union (EU), Payne said. "It is the western most part of the EU, basically isolated Ireland. Our focus, in Ireland, is definitely the EU, going eastward. Something that goes the opposite direction, into North America, is wonderfully educational. You can't lose," said Payne. "They learn how to deal with people on this side. They learn time differences, different accents. It's great for their resume. It's something different. It creates an individual brand." Garbutt said the project would be completed in April, as students will be presenting their work to SERC at that time. A launch date for the hub hasn't yet been set as it is still in the planning stages. "It's not out of a textbook. It's using a real client, it's working with people in another country, so I'm hoping they get some excitement and a flavour of reality with it (the hub)," said Garbutt. 17 | Friday, March 11, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Adam Payne It is the western most part of the EU, basically isolated Ireland.
