www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, March 11, 2016 | 22 Devil's Pool rumoured to be hideout for William Lyon MacKenzie continued from p.18 White also served as acting prime minister when Prime Minister Robert Borden attended the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. The area was also home to a cave on the east bank of 12-Mile (Bronte) Creek, north of Lower Middle Road. This cave featured a pool, an artesian spring and was referred to by local children as the "Devil's Pool." A local legend says William Lyon Mackenzie hid in this cave during his flight to the U.S. following the failed Rebellions of 1837. The TTHS said residents of Merton included the Speers family, who had a farm called Summerlea and occupied all the lands west of West River Street to West Street, from Lake Ontario to north of Rebecca Street. The Breckon family arrived in 1830 and farmed west of Bronte Creek and called their farm Spruce Lane -- the homestead currently operated at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. A later descendent, John Breckon and James White, co-owned and operated a racing stable north of Lower Middle Road raising horses, several of which won the Queen's Plate. Hobden noted this village was not the only place to be named Merton during this period. A little to the west, in the area of Appleby Line and Dundas Street, was a second community, which bore the Merton name in the 1850s. He said both villages were distinct and there appears to be no reason as to why they both had the same name. Following his presentation, Hobden talked about the importance of learning about the community's past. "A lot of our ancestors effort went into giving us what we have today," he said. "We need to realize that and appreciate it." The Merton Lands in the Burloak Drive and Third Line area have been in the news lately due to a development proposal to build 760 houses on a 55-hectare plot of land at 1401 Bronte Rd. That matter is currently before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).
