Turn clocks ahead one hour this weekend and check alarms Don't forget to turn your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night as Daylight Saving Time goes into effect Sunday (March 13). And while people are moving their clocks ahead in the time change that will give us additional daylight hours through the spring, summer and into the fall, they are being reminded to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and change the batteries in those alarms. "Although smoke detectors are an essential in the home, being out of sight up on the ceiling often means they are neglected," stated a Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs media release. Ontario law requires working smoke alarms on every storey of a residence and outside each sleeping area. All residences are also required to have working carbon monoxide alarms. The Oakville Fire department recommends, for added protection, residents install a smoke alarm inside all bedrooms. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, while replacement times for carbon monoxide alarms vary from five to 10 years. People should always follow the replacement schedule posted on each alarm. Tampering with or permanently removing batteries from a smoke alarm is illegal and failing to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements can result in a $235 ticket or fine of up to $50,000. In addition to having a home fire safety and escape plan, taking the following steps is also recommended: · smoke alarms are very sensitive, so even dust or insects can trigger it to go off. Be sure to clean the alarm with a soft brush or vacuum out the air regularly; · ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed properly and working; · regularly test fire alarms to ensure the battery and the alarm sounder are operating. This will also familiarize everyone in the home with the sound that is emitted when the unit detects smoke. Refer to manufacturer's guide for testing procedure; · keep all exits unobstructed and easy to access; · practise two ways out of each room, when possible; · determine who will be responsible for helping young children, the elderly, or others requiring assistance; · identify a meeting place outside, where all household members can gather; · in case of fire, get low and move under the smoke to the closest safe exit; · call 911 once outside the home using a cellphone or neighbour's telephone; · stay outside where it is safe; never reenter a burning building.
