Nancy Richards, whose extensive leadership experience in independent and public school systems, at both elementary and secondary levels, has taken her from Ontario to British Columbia, has been appointed Head of School by SMLS board of governors and the head search committee. Richards will start the post full-time in the summer and will visit in May to connect with students, parents and staff at the height of the school's 125th anniversary celebrations. She replaces Dorothy Byers, who will retire as head of school in June. Richards has a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto and a Master of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). Richards has participated extensively in a variety of professional development opportunities over the years, including studies at "The Harvard Graduate School of Education and Tufts University, Boston, University of Virginia, and the First National Summer School in Reggio Emilia, Italy -- all of which have informed and strengthened her educational leadership capacity as an extremely capable, collaborative and studentcentred educator," a press release states. The last 19 years of her career have been spent as an independent school administrator and an innovative educational leader in two of Canada's pre-eminent independent schools, Havergal College, Toronto, and St. Michaels University School, Victoria. Earlier in her career, the educator worked for the York Region District School Board as a classroom teacher, senior school department head, board curriculum consultant and area special education administrator, viceprincipal and principal. She has also been a member of a number of evaluation teams for the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), most recently at Bishop Strachan School and Branksome Hall, Toronto. In addition, Richards held the position of chair of the board for the Victoria Children's Museum. Richards will be relocating to Oakville over the summer with her husband Ken Cluley, who is an educational consultant and retired secondary school principal. Their daughter, Kate, is currently in her third year at Ryerson University in Toronto and is planning to pursue graduate work in Ontario. "They are looking forward to not only coming home to Ontario, but to connecting with and contributing to the St. Mildred'sLightbourn community," a press release states.
