Fabulous 50s live at Angels Diner By Nancy Alexander SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Walking through the door of Angels Diner on Speers Road is like taking a walk back in time to the days when the neighbourhood diner was king. The 50's was the era of Marilyn Munroe and James Dean, cars with big tail fins and even bigger gas tanks, chrome kitchen sets and lots of red vinyl. Angels has not only cap tured the spirit of the times in its lively decor, it has also kept some o f those 50's prices hanging around as well. Drop in on any weekday morning between 7 and 11:30 and you'll find the diner bustling with cus tomers taking advantage of the $2.49 breakfast specialtwo eggs, your choice of bacon, ham or sausage, toast and homefries. John Kokoris, owner and founder of the Angels group of diners says he took his inspiration from diners he had seen and liked in the U.S., then added a deli and take out menu as well. Having spent 35 years in the deli business, he decided to branch out with the diners just five years ago and now has locations in Guelph, Kitchener, Brantford and Oakville. Kokoris said his years in the deli business have taught him what people want-- good quality food at a good price. "I want my customers to go away satisfied. If there's something wrong, I"ll fix it." Although Angels has become well known for its breakfast special, Kokoris says there is good value on the menu for any meal of the day, whether its one of their jum bo M ontreal smoked meat sandwiches for lunch or a full course steak and seafood dinner. Angels also has a reputation for its giantsize salads which often come as a shock to customers who are ordering them for the first time. A special menu is offered for seniors "with seniors por tions and prices", and kids 10 and under eat free when accom panied by an adult with a minimum $7 pur chase. (One child per adult). "You have to be good in this business to survive," says Kokoris. "That is why all of our diners are run by families because they care about making sure the cus tomer is happy." In Oakville, George Kyritsis and his wife run the diner, along with a capable staff which also includes his teenage children on the weekend. "When it's your business, you make sure that every thing gets done right," says Kyritsis who recently broke his hip but continues to go to the diner daily on crutches to make sure everything is run ning smoothly. Angels Diner is located at 369 Speers Road.
